Doane Baseball opened their season on Saturday afternoon in Salina, Kansas, as the Tigers took on Kansas Wesleyan. The Coyotes had played eight games already this season heading into the doubleheader and the early season experience paid off as they swept Doane, 7-3 and 14-7.
In game one, Lukas White started off his senior campaign with a home run in his first at-bat, a solo shot to left-center in the first inning. KWU came back with three runs in the third inning on a home run and added four more in the fourth.
Doane came back with a sac fly RBI from Logan Amick in the seventh inning and Tanner Black hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to cap the scoring.
Aaron Forrest started on the hill for the Tigers and was charged with six earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Kyler Beekman threw 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out six.
At the plate, Doane finished with nine hits in the game. Nate Mensik and Justin Nevells had two hits apiece.
In game two, Doane fell behind 9-0 through four innings. The Tiger bats came alive in the fifth inning as Doane scored all seven of their runs.
Luke LaChance started the scoring with a solo home run. Jason Pridy scored on a throwing error which was followed up by White hitting a two-run double. Nate Mensik followed with a two-run double and came around to score on an error.
With Doane trailing 9-7, the Coyotes were able to score one in the bottom of the fifth and four in the sixth inning.
Julian Vargas started for Doane and went 3.0 innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Hyunjun Chung threw 0.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit with a strikeout. Zach Schuchart threw 1.0 inning and allowed one unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts. Jake King threw the final 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with one strikeout.
The Tigers had seven hits in the game, two from Joe Osborn.
Doane and Kansas Wesleyan will meet for one more game on Sunday, February 12, at 1 PM.
