Baseball Opens Rube Foster Classic with Sweep

Doane Baseball won a pair of games on Saturday afternoon to get the Rube Foster Classic underway. The Tigers opened with a 3-1 win over No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene and closed the day with an 8-2 win over William Penn.

In game one, Zach Schuchardt delivered 4.1 innings, scattering five hits and allowing one run while striking out three as he picked up the win. Jake King threw 0.2 of an inning, striking out one. Kyler Beekman threw 2.0 scoreless innings to collect the save.

Offensively, Doane posted eight hits with two coming off the bat of James Griess. He had an infield single to plate Luke LaChancein the second inning. Griess extended the lead with a two-run double in the fourth inning. The Pioneers scored their lone run in the fifth inning.

Narumi Okayasu added two hits for the Tigers and scored a run in his Doane debut. Doane finished with eight hits in the game.

In the second game of the day for Doane, the Tigers scored three runs in each of the first two innings to set the tone towards a victory.

Aaron Forrest struck out the side in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers drew a pair of walks, setting up a three-run home run by Lukas White. William Penn came back with two runs in the second inning.

Doane extended their lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Brett Meyer. White added a RBI-double to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead.

In the fourth inning, Doane pushed two more runs across the plate as Meyer had a sacrifice fly and White had a RBI-single.

Forrest picked up the win, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with seven strikeouts. Raidyn Steele threw 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out three while allowing one hit.

White finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored and five driven in. Jack Tillman was 3-for-3 with Tanner Black scoring two runs as his courtesy runner. Griess and Joe Osborn also scored two runs in the game. Meyer teamed with White to account for the runs batted in, plating three.

Doane returns to the field on Sunday, February 26, when they take on Columbia (Mo.) at 10:30 AM and Baker (Kan.) at 4 PM.
