Pitching Duals Go Broncos' Way

Doane Baseball opened a four-game weekend series with Hastings on Saturday on the road. Both games were decided by one run as the Broncos swept the Tigers, 2-1 and 4-3. The losses snapped a 10-game win streak in the series for Doane. The two teams will play in Crete on Sunday afternoon.

In game one, the Tigers plated a run in the second inning on a Logan Amick double to drive in Jason Pridy. Doane stranded five runners on base in the first four innings.

Hastings tied the game in the fifth inning with a two-out bloop single. The Broncos took the lead in the sixth inning on a two-out infield single.

Doane was able to load the bases in the sixth and put two runners on in the seventh but was unable to pick up the key hit late. The Tigers were held to four hits in the game, two from Amick.

Aaron Forrest took the loss as he scattered five hits while walking three and striking out five in throwing a complete game.

The second game, back-to-back doubles in the second inning put the Tigers on the board first. With one out, Luke LaChance and Brett Meyer each hit a double to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Hastings took the lead with two runs. The Broncos started with a walk and a double to put two runners in scoring position. Following a pair of outs, Hastings received a two-run single up the middle to take the lead.

Doane tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo home run by Justin Nevells. Doane took the lead in the fifth inning as an error plated a run. Hastings regained the lead in the eighth inning with another two-out hit, a double to plate two runs. The Tigers were able to put the tying run on base in the ninth inning but were prevented from tying the game, finishing with nine runners left on base.

Julian Vargas started and went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Jake Johnson allowed a run on a hit in 1.0 inning of work. Kyler Beekman took the loss, allowing one run on one hit with a strike out in 1.0 inning.

Offensively, Doane finished with eight hits, two off the bat of Lukas White.
