Long Ball, Strong Pitching, Delivers Baseball Two Wins Over Jamestown

Doane Baseball opened their four-game series with Jamestown on Friday afternoon in Orange City, Iowa. The Tigers' bats came out swinging and carried the team to a sweep, 14-7 and 18-1.

In the first game, Doane scored in six of the seven innings played. The teams were matching innings early on with both teams scoring a run in the first and multiple runs in the second. Jamestown led 4-3 going into the fourth inning when the Tigers plated six runs to take control of the game. The Jimmies committed five errors in the game, aiding the Doane out-burst.

Jack Tillman led the team with three hits while Logan Amick, Lukas White, and Justin Nevells had two hits apiece. Doane added runs late in the game with the long ball, a trend that would continue into game two. Luke LaChance hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and Nate Mensik hit a solo shot in the seventh.

Aaron Forrest benefitted from the offensive game as he was able to settle in for 5.0 innings of work, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out six. Jake Johnson threw 1.0 innings, allowing two hits. Raidyn Steele threw 1.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out two.

In game two, Julian Vargas shut down the Jimmies offense as he limited them to one run on four hits over 6.0 innings of work. He posted nine strikeouts and walked two. Jake King threw one scoreless inning, walking one.

The Tigers once again scored runs in six of the seven innings. Mensik started the scoring with a three-run home run in the first inning. In the fourth inning, Doane scored seven runs behind a grand slam from Joe Osborn. James Griess hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Nevells hit a two-run home run and Braden Olson added a two-run pinch hit home run. The five home runs were one shy of the team record for a single game.

Mensik finished with three hits while Amick, White, and Nevells had two hits apiece. Osborn led the way with four RBI and Mensik added three RBI. Amick scored a team-high three runs in the game.
