Baseball Opens GPAC Tournament with 15-1 Win
Doane Baseball opened the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tournament on Thursday afternoon as they took on Briar Cliff in the second game of the day. The Tigers broke the game open in the sixth inning and ran away with a 15-1 victory over the Chargers. In the first game of the day, Mount Marty defeated Jamestown, 3-2.
The Tigers plated a run in the first inning on a Lukas White RBI-double to drive in Joe Osborn. The Chargers tied the game in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI-single from Jared Sitzmann.
In the bottom of the fifth inning and with two outs, Cristian Yanez put the Tigers back in front with a solo home run. Doane added four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Luke LaChance had a sacrifice fly, Jack Tillman delivered an RBI-single, and Justin Nevells drove in two runs with a single.
The game was blown open in the eighth inning as Doane scored nine runs. The Tigers scored runs on RBI-singles from LaChance, Tillman, Yanez, and Brett Meyer. White drove in two runs with a single. A hit by pitch with the bases loaded gave LaChance his second RBI of the inning and Narumi Okayasu drove in the final two runs with a single.
Aaron Forrest defeated the Chargers for the second time in a week as he improved to 9-2 on the season. He went 7.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six batters. Jake Johnson threw a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out one. Jake King threw the final scoreless inning, allowing two hits and striking out two. Tiger pitching combined for nine strikeouts in the game.
White finished the game for Doane with three RBI and a run scored as he went 3-for-5 at the plate. LaChance matched White for the team-high in RBI with three. The Tigers received two RBI apiece from Tillman, Okayasu, Nevells, and Yanez. Nate Mensik led the team with three runs scored.
Doane collected 15 hits in the game. In addition to White, five more players had two hits in the game - Mensik, Tillman, Okayasu, Nevells, and Yanez.
It will be a short turnaround for the Tigers as they draw the first game of the day on Friday morning in Crete. Doane will take on Mount Marty at 9 AM with Briar Cliff and Jamestown to follow at 12 PM as part of a tripleheader Friday.
