Baseball Rallies Twice to Post Second Win of Season
Baseball took on Culver-Stockton in the second game of the day and had to battle back from two multiple-run deficits in the game. The Tigers came out on top of the Wildcats, 7-5.
Back-to-back two-out doubles for the Wildcats in the top of the first gave CSC a 3-0 lead. Doane came back in the bottom of the inning with three runs to tie the game. Narumi Okayasu hit a sacrifice fly for the first Tiger run and Brayden Jones added a two-run double to tie the game.
Culver-Stockton regained the lead with a two-out single in the fourth inning to plate two runs as they went back in front, 5-3. Luke LaChance cut the lead in half with an RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth. In the sixth inning, LaChance doubled to put Doane in front as two runs scored. He came in to score on an error.
The Wildcats were not going to go quiet in the final inning, putting the first two batters on base. The Tigers were able to get out of the inning without a run scoring behind two strikeouts and a flyout.
Kyler Beekman started for the Tigers and went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three. Raidyn Steele collected the win (1-0) with 3.0 innings of work, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three.
At the plate, Doane had eight hits with six coming via the double. LaChance was 2-for-3 with a run scored, three driven in, and two doubles. Also with doubles were Joe Osborn, Nate Mensik, Justin Nevells, and Jones.
The Tigers' two returning GPAC Gold Glove outfielders, Osborn and Mensik, also came up with key defensive assists as each threw a runner out at third base in the game.
Doane will replicate their slate of games on Saturday as they begin with Columbia at noon and Culver-Stockton at 2:30 PM to conclude their opening weekend of play.
