Baseball Upsets No. 10 Spartans to Open Weekend Set
Baseball opened their weekend in St. Louis, Missouri, taking on NAIA No. 10 Missouri Baptist. The Tigers scored early and often on their way to a 14-5 victory over the Spartans. The victory was the first over a Top 10 opponent since 2018.
Doane scored twice in the top of the first inning with Missouri Baptist answering with two in the bottom of the frame. Both teams turned double plays in the inning to limit the other from plating more runs.
The Tigers regained the lead with two runs in the second inning. Narumi Okayasu had a go-ahead RBI-single and Brayden Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate the runs. In the third inning, Doane scored three runs on two RBI-singles and a sacrifice fly. The Tigers broke the game open in the fourth inning with five runs crossing the plate. Logan Amick drove in two runs with a single in the frame.
Missouri Baptist scored a run in the sixth inning but Doane answered back with two runs on a single by Justin Nevells in the seventh inning. The Spartans scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to cap the scoring.
Aaron Forrest started for the Tigers and picked up the win (4-0) as he allowed two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work. Isaiah Miller threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on two hits.
Doane had 13 hits in the game with eight coming out of the top two spots in the lineup. Amick was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three driven in. Okayasu was 4-for-6 with a run scored and three RBI. Luke LaChance and Miller (as the courtesy runner) scored three runs apiece.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, March 2, to take on Missouri Baptist in the first game of the day followed by a match-up with Clarke (Iowa).
