Baseball Stays Hot and Tops Clarke
Baseball closed out their St. Louis, Missouri, weekend on Sunday morning with a match-up against Clarke (Iowa). The Tigers struck first as they posted an 8-2 win over the Pride. The victory improved Doane's overall record to 13-1.
Three unearned runs crossed the plate for the Tigers in the third inning. Dane Kelsey reached on a two-out error that allowed two runs to score. The Pride were unsuccessful on a pickoff attempt that was thrown away, allowing another run to score to give Doane a 3-0 lead.
Clarke scored a run in the fourth with Doane answering with a run in the fifth. Kelsey recorded an RBI-double. The Pride scored a run in the sixth to leave the Tigers in front, 4-2.
Doane pushed two runs across the plate in the eighth and ninth innings. Aaron Vulcano tripled to plate LaChance and on the play, the left fielder attempted to flip the ball to the center fielder and the ball ended up over the outfield wall to allow Vulcano to score. Luke LaChance drove in two runs with a single in the ninth.
Broc Songster started for the Tigers and went 5.2 innings. He improved to 2-0 as he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out one. Raidyn Steele threw 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Haldon Craig threw 1.0 inning, striking out two batters.
The Tigers had eight hits in the game, two apiece from Logan Amick and LaChance. Narumi Okayasu led Doane with two runs scored and LaChance had a team-leading two RBI in the game.
Next up for the Tigers will be a trip to Kansas City, Kansas, as the Tigers play a revised schedule. Doane was originally scheduled to play two with No. 10 Missouri Baptist but the weekend will now feature two games against Saint Ambrose (Iowa) and one against Missouri Baptist. The Tigers will take on Saint Ambrose on Friday, March 8, at 3 PM. On Saturday, March 9, Doane will face Saint Ambrose at 11 AM, the Bees will face Missouri Baptist at 1:30 PM, and then the Tigers will face the Spartans at 4 PM.
