Baseball Takes Two to Open Hastings Series

Baseball played their first home conference games of the season on Thursday as they played host to Hastings. Despite an early 10 AM start and cold temperatures, the Tigers pitching staff came out on fire to post a sweep of the Broncos, 2-1 and 6-0.

Hits were at a minimum on the day. In the opener, Doane finished with four hits while holding Hastings to three hits. The Broncos scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning with a one-out single. The Tigers were able to work out of the inning as Hastings stranded two on base.

In the bottom of the fourth, Doane put their first two batters on base only to have back-to-back outs in foul territory. Justin Nevells extended the inning with an infield single to load the bases and Logan Amick delivered a two-run single to put Doane in front.

Kellen Voggesser started for the Tigers and went 5.0 innings to earn the win. He allowed one run on one hit and four walks while striking out six. Ethan Merk picked up his first save as he threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.

In the second game, Doane plated a run in the second inning on a two-out triple by Aaron Vulcano. In the third inning, the Tigers extended their lead with two runs to take a 3-0 lead. Joe Osborn doubled to plate a run and came around to score on a fielder's choice.

Doane doubled their lead in the fifth inning with three runs. Amick drew a bases loaded walk to plate a run and Narumi Okayasu followed with a sacrifice fly. Vulcano scored the final Tiger run on a wild pitch.

While the offense was building the Tiger lead, Broc Songster was keeping the Bronco bats off balanced. Despite walking seven batters over five innings, he kept Hastings hitless over that same time period while striking out four. Isaiah Miller took over and threw the final 2.0 innings. With one out in the top of the seventh, the Broncos picked up their first hit of the game on an infield single that deflected off the base umpire.

The Tigers finished with six hits in the game, two off the bat of Osborn.

Next up for Doane will be the remaining two games of the four-game series with Hastings. The games will now be played on Friday, March 22, in Hastings beginning at 2 PM.
