Baseball Takes Advantage of Clarke Mistakes
Baseball hosted Clarke on Sunday to close out their four-game series. In the first game of the day, Doane posted a 7-5 victory over the Pride.
Clarke scored the first run of the game on a Tiger error in the third inning. Doane tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Carter Roth scored on a wild pitch. The Pride regained the lead in the fifth inning with three runners crossing the plate for a 4-1 lead.
Doane battled back in the fifth inning and took advantage of a couple of fielding mistakes by Clarke. Justin Nevells reached on a bunt single and the throw to first was wild, allowing Carson Baker and Logan Amick to score. Max Harris singled to score Nevells to tie the game at 4-all. Johnny Vulcano put Doane in front with an RBI-single to bring Harris across the plate. Dane Kelsey followed with an RBI-single to drive in Taiyo Takahashi and a throwing error allowed Vulcano to score for a 7-4 lead. Clarke picked up a run in the sixth inning for the final scoring tally.
Broc Songster started for Doane and went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out four. Cade Bridges threw the final 2.2 innings to pick up the win, allowing one unearned run on one hit and three walks with two strikeouts.
The Tigers collected 10 hits, all singles, in the game, two from Roth and Vulcano. Seven different players scored runs in the game and Doane finished with only three RBI on the runs scored.
Game two was scheduled to take place 30 minutes after the game concluded.
