Eleven-Run Inning Lifts Baseball in Illinois
Baseball kept the offense rolling from the late stages of game one and scored in six of the seven innings in game two as they cruised to a 20-6 win over St. Francis. The Tigers used an 11-run second inning to break the game open.
Brayden Jones started the scoring with a two-out, two-run home run for a 2-0 lead. St. Francis came back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game. The Tigers regained the lead in the second inning on an RBI-single by Logan Amick. Carter Roth delivered a two-run single and Jones doubled to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead. Max Harris added a two-run triple, Dane Kelsey picked up an RBI-single, and Amick cleared the bases for his fourth RBI of the inning. Justin Nevells plated the final run of the inning with a double.
Gerald Nix plated a run in the third inning with a single. Sam Kwapnioski hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for a 16-2 lead. The Saints scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning but Doane responded with three more in the sixth. Kwapnioski tripled to plate two runs and then scored on a wild pitch. The final Tiger run scored on a Misael Cantu RBI-double. St. Francis scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh before the game concluded.
Riley Plummer started for the Tigers and went 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. Kaizer Papenhagen threw 1.0 inning, allowing one run on one hit and one walk. Adam Wilmore threw 1.0 inning, allowing a walk and striking out one batter. Alec Harshaw threw 1.0 inning, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three.
Doane had 21 hits from 14 players. Amick was 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. Roth was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI with Jones going 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI. Harris was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while Kwapnioski was 2-for-2 with two runs and four RBI. Nix was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Also scoring two runs were Carson Baker, Kelan Polard, and Taiyo Takahashi. The Tigers had 13 extra base hits, eight doubles, three triples, and two home runs. The team tied the school record for triples in a game.
Doane and St. Francis will close out their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
