Baseball Downed by Bulldogs to Concluded Day One of Series
Baseball faced No. 22 Concordia in the second game of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon as part of the four-game series. The Tigers jumped in front early but a big seventh inning for the Bulldogs lifted them to a 9-4 win to even the series at one game apiece.
The game started much like the first game with Concordia hitting a solo home run to lead off the second inning and Doane tying the game in the bottom of the inning. Justin Nevells had a one-out single to drive in Max Harris for the first run to tie the game at 1-1.
In the third inning, the Tigers took the lead with a solo home run from Dane Kelsey, his first of the year. Doane added to their lead in the sixth inning as Nevells hit a two-run home run to bring in Aaron Vulcano.
Concordia opened the seventh inning with a solo home run to cut the Doane lead to 4-2. Four of the next five batters drew a walk to bring in another run, cutting the Tiger lead to one run. The Bulldogs went in front with a grand slam home run on a 3-2 pitch to take a 7-4 lead. Concordia added two runs in the ninth inning on a home run for the final scoring. Doane threatened in the bottom of the ninth, leaving the bases loaded to end the game.
Walks would hurt the Tiger pitching staff, issuing 10 in the game. Riley Plummer started and went 6.0-plus innings, allowing four runs on three hits and five walks while striking out five. Ethan Merk took the loss, allowing two runs on two walks with one strikeout in 0.1 inning. Nicolas Yard allowed one run on one hit and a walk while striking out one. Carter Baete threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The staff combined to strike out 11 Bulldog batters.
Doane out-hit the Bulldogs for the second straight game, 11-7. Nevells was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three driven in. Sam Kwapnioski was 2-for-5 with a double and Kelsey was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run. Taiyo Takahashi was 2-for-4 with a double. Doane had three doubles and two home runs in the game.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday with the first pitch of game three in the series at 12 PM.
