Bellevue Rallies Late to Down Baseball in Non-Conference Game
Baseball hosted Bellevue on Tuesday afternoon in Crete. Both teams entered the game on winning streaks and are receiving votes in the latest NAIA national poll. The Bruins were able to rally for a 13-7 win over the Tigers to extend their win-streak to 17 games while Doane's was snapped at eight.
The Bruins scored the first run of the game in the opening inning behind four walks, the last plating a run. Doane came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Jordan Bond doubled to drive in Johnny Vulcano and Aaron Vulcano with two outs.
Bellevue regained the lead in the second inning with three unearned runs. The Tigers battled back in the third to tie the game with two runs. Bond doubled to drive in Sam Kwapnioski and Taiyo Takahashi singled to plate Aaron Vulcano.
In the fourth, both teams hit solo home runs. Doane's home run came courtesy of Logan Amick. The Tigers regained the lead in the fifth inning as Bond tied the single-game record for doubles with his third of the game, driving in Johnny Vulcano. In the seventh inning, a wild pitch allowed Vulcano to score his second straight run.
In the eighth, Bellevue went back in front with a pair of home runs to drive in three for an 8-7 lead. In the ninth, a grand slam along with an unearned run accounted for the final total.
Carter Baete started for Doane and went 1.0-plus inning, allowing three runs (one earned) on five walks and a hit batter while striking out one. Raidyn Steele threw 3.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts. Kaizer Papenhagen threw 3.0-plus innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Cade Bridges took the loss, going 2.0 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and a strikeout.
Doane out-hit Bellevue, 13-12, for the game with half of the Bruins hits coming in the final two innings. Johnny Vulcano and Aaron Vulcano were both 3-for-4 at the plate with Johnny scoring three runs and Aaron scoring twice. Bond was 3-for-3 with three doubles and four RBI.
Next up for the Tigers will be a trip to Orange City, Iowa, to take on Northwestern in a four-game series. First pitch of game one is set for Friday, April 18, at 1 PM.
