Eight-Run Inning Lifts Baseball in Game One at NWC
Baseball returned to Orange City, Iowa, for a doubleheader with Northwestern on Monday afternoon to complete their four-game series. The Tigers jumped out of the gate early with eight runs in the first inning as they posted a 16-4 victory in the first game of the day.
The scoring started with a Jordan Bond single to plate Sam Kwapnioski. Aaron Vulcano followed with a two-run single and Justin Nevells added a bases clearing triple to give Doane a 6-0 lead. Nevells would score on a wild pitch and later in the inning, Kwapnioski picked up his second hit of the inning and drove in Max Harris for an eight-run lead.
In the second inning, Nevells added to the lead with a two-run home run. Kwapnioski singled in the third inning to drive in Logan Amick to put the Tigers up 11-0. Northwestern scored their first run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly.
After going scoreless in the fourth, the Tigers added three runs in the fifth inning. Bond doubled to drive in Johnny Vulcano for a run but Bond would come off the base paths following a lineout double play. Brayden Jones followed with another hard hit ball, this one for a solo home run. An error allowed Taiyo Takahashi to score for a 14-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Cristian Yanez blasted a pinch hit home run to straight away center field to add two runs to the Tiger lead. Northwestern posted three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final tallies.
Nicolas Yard started for the Tigers and went 5.0 innings. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three. Kaizer Papenhagen threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Doane picked up 15 hits in the opening game, led by Kwapnioski going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Nevells led the team in runs driven in as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI. Bond was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI while Aaron Vulcano was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI as well. The Tigers finished with eight extra base hits in the game, four doubles, a triple, and three home runs.
