Baseball Closes Out Sweep of Chargers

CRETE, Neb. – Doane Tigers completed a dominant doubleheader sweep of Briar Cliff Chargers on Saturday, rolling to a 13-4 victory in game two at Doane Ballfield Complex.

After falling behind early, Doane responded with relentless offense, scoring in all eight of the game's eight completed innings to improve to 22-7 overall and 9-3 in GPAC play.

Briar Cliff struck first in the opening inning, using a two-run home run from Nico Sall to take an early 2-0 lead. The Tigers wasted little time answering, as Grant Sommers tripled in the bottom of the first and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Max Harris to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Doane seized control in the second inning. After Jordan Bond doubled and Adam Wilmore reached on an error, Sam Kwapnioski launched a three-run home run to left field, giving the Tigers a 4-2 advantage.

The Tigers continued to build momentum in the third inning when Tanner Nelson doubled and later scored on an RBI double from Johnny Vulcano, extending the lead to 5-3. In the fourth, Doane added two more runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Sommers to push the lead to 7-4.

From there, Doane's offense never let up. The Tigers added single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, including a solo home run from Sommers in the sixth. Doane then put the game away in the eighth inning, scoring three more runs—two coming across on a Briar Cliff error—to make it 13-4.

Sommers led the offensive charge with a career day hitting for the cycle, going 4-for-5 with a home run, triple, double, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Kwapnioski was equally impactful, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Vulcano added two hits and two RBIs, while Bond chipped in a double.

On the mound, Nicolas Yard earned the win, tossing five innings while allowing four runs on five hits and striking out four. Ethan Merk was strong in relief, throwing four scoreless innings and allowing just two hits while striking out three to secure a save.

Doane totaled 12 hits in the contest and capitalized on three Briar Cliff errors, continuing a trend of aggressive and efficient offense throughout the doubleheader sweep.
