Esports has Combined 1-1 Start (Week One Recap)

Doane Esports returned to the digital field last week as the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) fall season began. This semester teams are competing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Rocket League, and Overwatch 2. Here's how each fared this week:

Super Smash Bros. defeats Waldorf University, 2-0

The Super Smash Bros. team was able to secure their first win of the season against fellow GPAC member Waldorf University. The last time these two teams met was in the GPAC Esports Championship Semifinals last February, where Waldorf won 2-0. This week Doane came out on top in a best-of-three series, winning 12-10 and 12-8. 

John "wert" Donlan and Ryan "Awsmsun" Burton both accumulated 7 Knock Outs across the two games in the series, while Caleb "Frosty" Panning scored 6 during his only appearance in the first game. Rounding out the team were Gaby "Stuxs" Medina's 4 KO's and Manny "Dat1Meme" Medina's 1 KO.  

A replay of the match can be found on the Doane Esports YouTube channel. The Super Smash Bros. team plays the University of North Dakota Green next on September 30th at 7:00pm. 

 

Rocket League falls to Saint Mary University Gold, 4-2

The Rocket League squad put up a fight in their Week 1 match against Saint Mary University Gold, but ultimately came up short. Four of the six games were decided by only one point, and two games went into overtime, showing just how close the series was. 

All four team members were able to score a goal in the series:

  • Todd "T8er" Martin led with 4 goals

  • Nathan "Shupeyy" Shupe followed with 3 goals

  • Newcomers to the team Espn "ExtraBologna" Marez and Ryker "AFKSpider" Hager each picked up 1 goal.  

A replay of the match can be found on the Doane Esports YouTube channel. The Rocket League team looks to bounce back against California State Polytechnic University Gray on October 1st at 7:30pm. 

 

Overwatch vs UCLA Academy Rescheduled

Due to unforeseen scheduling issues, the Overwatch squad had to delay their Week 1 debut. They will now face UCLA Academy on Thursday October 2nd at 7:30pm. Overwatch has a bye for Friday October 3rd.
