Football Post-Season Honors

As the season begins to wrap up, post-season honors are announced at the conference and national levels. Here is a look at the 2017 football honors.

All-Conference Honors (November 15)
Doane finished the year at 5-5 this year with a 3-5 conference mark in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). A total of 14 players earned 15 All-GPAC honors.

Receiving First Team All-GPAC were Cole Wiseman (SR/Sutton, Neb.) and Bryce Cooney (SO/Omaha, Neb.). Second Team All-GPAC honors went to Jacob Cornelius (SR/Grand Island, Neb.), Drew Klein (SR/Papillion, Neb.), Tanner Webster (SR/Lincoln, Neb.), Wiseman, Anthony Malone (SO/Centennial, Colo.), Bret Andrew (SR/Casper,Wyo.), Tariq Mustafaa (SR/Cedar Hill, Texas) and Chayton Crow (JR/Hershey, Neb.). Earning the honorable mention nod were Brysen Mach (SR/Crete, Neb.), Seth Majerus (JR/Seward, Neb.), Kyle Jensen (JR/Exeter, Neb.), Hunter Bradley (SO/Crete, Neb.) and Connor Hughes (JR/Nederland, Texas).

Wiseman was the only dual-position selection. As a defensive back, he received First Team recognition and as a punt returner he was named to the Second Team. He finished fourth in the NAIA with six interceptions this year at the end of the regular season. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns while posting 61 tackles.

Cooney was among the GPAC leaders with six field goals made this year. He converted on 75-percent of his attempts. In limited chances, he was also 3-for-3 in extra point attempts.

The combination of Cornelius, Klein and Bradley gave the Tigers a three-headed monster at receiver. The trio made it difficult for teams to focus on stopping one receiver.

Klein led the Tigers with 51 receptions for 570 yards and five touchdowns. Cornelius led the team with 672 yards on 44 receptions and three touchdowns. Bradley finished with 39 receptions for 537 yards and five touchdowns.

Webster helped anchor the Tiger offensive line and was the most consistent in the trenches this year for the team. His efforts helped the Tiger offense rush for 1,661 yards, 4.6 yards/carry, and 14 touchdowns.

Running behind Webster and the rest of the line was Jensen. He led the team with 707 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns.

Malone and Hughes anchored the defensive line for the Tigers. Opponents were held to 3.8 yards per carry this year as Malone finished the season with 32 tackles and recovered two fumbles. Hughes added 42 tackles, including 6.0 tackles for loss, and three fumble recoveries.

Andrew and Mach led the way at linebacker in tackles this season. Andrew finished with 57 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, and one fumble recovery. Mach added 55 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, and one fumble recovery.

Joining Wiseman in the secondary was the trio of Mustafaa, Crow and Majerus. The Tigers finished the year with 14 interceptions. Mustafaa and Crow collected two apiece and combined with Wiseman for 10 of the team's 14. Crow led the squad with 78 tackles this year. Mustafaa finished with 64, including 6.5 tackles for loss, and Majerus was in on 59 tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss.

CoSIDA Academic All-District (November 16)

A pair of Doane football players received academic accolades on November 16 as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District teams were announced. Najee Mustafaa (JR/Cedar Hill, Texas) and Jarod Fiegener (SR/Falls City, Neb.) were selected to the First Team for their efforts this year and will now be among the finalist for the Academic All-American honor which is announced in December.

Doane is in District 3 of the College Division with schools from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Mustafaa was one of two running backs selected from the district. A biology major, he posted 272 rushing yards this year with four touchdowns. Mustafaa averaged 3.9 yards per carry on 69 attempts. He posted career-highs in attempts, yards and touchdowns this year.

Fiegener was one of four defensive linemen selected. An accounting and business administration major, he posted 23 tackles this season with 1.5 tackles for loss. He added three pass break-ups to his total. For his career, he finished with 76 tackles and 14.5 tackles for loss.

Both players missed time due to injuries this year, only to battle back for the stretch run at the end of the season.

AFCA-NAIA All-Americans Announced (December 11)

Doane Football defensive back Cole Wiseman has been tabbed to the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) 2017 NAIA Coaches' All-America First Team. Wiseman is the first player at Doane to garner First Team honors since Dillon Carmichael was honored on the offensive line in 2013.

Wiseman was 6th in the NAIA in interceptions this year with six, including two for touchdowns. He added 162 return yards on his interceptions. Wiseman finished the season with 61 tackles, including 45 solo, and had one tackles for loss.

Also a significant contributor to the special teams, Wiseman led the team with 13 punt returns for 125 yards while sitting second on the team with 12 kickoff returns for 241 yards.

He wrapped up his career with 221 total tackles, 155 solo, five tackles for loss, 21 pass break-ups and 12 interceptions.

CoSIDA Academica All-Americans Announced (December 11)

Doane Football defensive lineman Jarod Fiegener has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 2017 College Division Academic All-America Team. With Fiegener's selection, Doane Football has had an Academic All-American for seven consecutive years dating back to 2011.

Fiegener was in on 23 tackles this year despite missing three games with injury. He recorded 1.5 tackles for loss and three pass break-ups as well. For his career, he posted 76 total tackles with 6.5 sacks. He also had 14.5 tackles for loss.

NAIA/Daktronics Scholar-Athletes Announced (December 15)

Doane placed 10 players on the NAIA/Daktronics Scholar-Athlete list today. To be named, a student-athlete must hold a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and be of junior or senior academic status.

Named to the award this year were Bret Andrew, Jarod Fiegener, Jared Bithell, Bryce Chudomelka, Turner Hill, Jackson Love, Najee Mustafaa, Garrett Sonderup, Vaughn Suits, and Bryce Wright.

Associated Press (AP) All-American Team Announced (December 15)

Cole Wiseman was selected today to the Associated Press (AP) NAIA Football All-American Second Team at defensive back.

Wiseman was 6th in the NAIA in interceptions this year with six, including two for touchdowns. He added 162 return yards on his interceptions. Wiseman finished the season with 61 tackles, including 45 solo, and had one tackles for loss.

Also a significant contributor to the special teams, Wiseman led the team with 13 punt returns for 125 yards while sitting second on the team with 12 kickoff returns for 241 yards.

He wrapped up his career with 221 total tackles, 155 solo, five tackles for loss, 21 pass break-ups and 12 interceptions.
