Second Half Defense Lifts Football to Win

After falling behind by 10 points to open the game, the Doane Football team rattled off 21 unanswered points on their way to a 21-16 victory over Concordia to close out the season. Doane finishes the year with a 6-4 mark, 5-4 in the GPAC and tied for fourth. Concordia ends the season at 3-7 and 2-7 in the GPAC.

Game Highlights

  • Concordia controlled the early stages of the game on both sides of the ball. The Bulldogs held Doane to a 3-and-out and the Tigers first two possessions of the game. Concordia strung together two scoring drives to counter the defense stops for a 10-0 lead.
  • Doane cut into the lead on their third possession as they marched 66 yards on six plays to find the end zone. Jack Kalina (JR/Papillion, Neb.) connected with Wyatt Bodfield (SO/Crete, Neb.) for a 7-yard score. The drive was keyed by a 28-yard run from Garrett Sonderup (SR/Genoa, Neb.) and a 26-yard pass completion to Brandon Gannon (JR/Grand Island, Neb.).
  • Midway through the 2nd quarter, Doane took over near midfield following a 3-and-out defensive stop. The Tigers covered 51 yards on eight plays as Jamaine Derogene (SO/Dunedin, Florida) scored on a 9-yard run to put the Tigers in front.
  • Doane's defense forced another 3-and-out for Concordia after the Bulldogs started the drive on their 3-yard line following a failed kickoff reverse. With the Tigers in danger of missing out on an opportunity, Kalina hit Jacob Beller (SR/Norfolk, Neb.) on a third down pass for a 44-yard touchdown.
  • The second half highlights belong to the Doane defense, which held Concordia to negative-three yards rushing in the half.
  • Concordia made one last push on their final possession of the game as they took the ball down to the Doane 36-yard line. A holding penalty and a sack by Nathan Williams (SO/Kearney, Neb.) sent the Bulldogs back into their own territory. Doane then forced the turnover on downs with a 4th down stop.
