Football Suffers Fourth Quarter Setback

Football suffered a tough loss on Saturday afternoon in Crete, falling to Dakota Wesleyan, 17-10. The Tigers held a 10-0 lead after three quarters but turnovers would swing the momentum to DWU in the fourth quarter.

Doane's points came in the second quarter, starting with a 44-yard field goal from Kelen Meyer with 9:21 to play before the half. The Tigers found the end zone late in the quarter as Cruz Kirwan hit Frazzie Wynn out of the backfield for a 17-yard touchdown to go up 10-0 with 42 seconds left before the half.

A fumble by Doane late in the third quarter would set DWU up for their first score of the game. Dakota Wesleyan covered 23 yards on eight plays to convert a 27-yard field goal with 12:24 to play in the 4th quarter. On the Tigers' next possession, DWU intercepted a pass at the 41-yard line and returned it for a touchdown. The extra point was missed, leaving Doane in front, 10-9, with 11:00 to go in the contest.

Following a Doane punt, DWU marched 85 yards on 11 plays to take their first lead of the day on a three-yard touchdown run. Dakota Wesleyan converted the 2-point conversion to take a seven point lead.

Doane had one last chance, driving down the field and into DWU territory behind a pair of 19-yard completions and two Dakota Wesleyan penalties. The last of the penalties gave Doane a first down following pass interference on fourth down. With two seconds left, the Tigers sent a pass towards the end zone but would not receive another penalty call as the game clock ran out.

For the game, Doane garnered more yards than their counterparts, posting 360 compared to 266 for DWU. The Tigers finished with 169 rushing yards and 191 passing yards. Trystan Graf recorded 87 yards, including a 65-yard run. Wynn finished with 82 yards. Kirwan completed 14-of-32 with a long of 27-yards to Joaquin Gutierrez. He would lead the Tigers with 82 receiving yards on four receptions.

Defensively, Jarett Boggs led the team with 10 tackles including one for a loss. Tanner Simdorn finished with seven tackles and a sack. Marcus Randazzo, Cooper Hancock, and Reece Zutavern had six tackles apiece. The defense finished with six tackles for loss, covering 11 yards.

Next up for the Tigers will be a trip to Orange City, Iowa, to take on Northwestern on September 16.
