Quick Start Not Enough as Football Downed in Mitchell

Football traveled to Mitchell, S.D., on Saturday afternoon to take on Dakota Wesleyan in their Homecoming game. Doane's bid to upset DWU on their day came up short as the host squad pulled away in the second half for a 47-21 victory over the visiting Tigers.

Doane scored on their first two drives of the game. Sam Hartman found Nate Fox for a 2-yard touchdown pass and Reece Zutavern on a four-yard touchdown completion as the Tigers led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Dakota Wesleyan scored on their final two drives in the second quarter to take a 20-14 lead into halftime. Doane blocked an extra point attempt on the first of the two scores. DWU scored on all three of their possessions in the third quarter and on one in the fourth quarter.

Doane scored the final points of the game as Hartman scored on a quarterback keeper. He finished the game 17-of-28 for 219 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 24 yards and a score. Rian Green led the team with 104 yards rushing on 15 carries. John DeRiso posted 130 yards on six receptions.

Jarett Boggs led the team with seven tackles, including four solo. Andrew Brown added six tackles, four solo, and also posted 131 yards on kickoff returns. Keegan Shuler finished with five tackles, with three solo.

Doane will be home next weekend, October 19, as they host Concordia at 1 PM for Homecoming.
