Men's Basketball Falls in Overtime to Tabor
Men's Basketball hosted Tabor (Kan.) on Wednesday evening in Crete. The Tigers jumped out early but the Bluejays would rally and pick up a 71-69 win in overtime.
Doane took a 20-8 lead midway through the opening half and extended their lead to 15 points, 25-10, with 8:45 to play in the first half. The Tigers would go without a basket over the next five minutes as Tabor began to chip into the Doane lead. Cooper Sheldon scored with 3:41 to play in the half, snapping a 9-0 Bluejay run. Doane led at the break, 30-26.
Tabor started the second half with a 9-3 run to take their first lead of the game at 17:07 to play. With 11:46 to play, the Bluejays held a one point advantage but Guy Moran quickly changed that with back-to-back 3-point baskets to put Doane up five points, 49-44, with 10:57 to play.
The Bluejays battled back in front, 61-57, with four minutes left. Neither team would score until Cam Binder knocked down a 3-point basket with 34 seconds left in regulation. Following a foul, Tabor made one free throw to go up 62-60 with 26 seconds to go. On the next Tiger possession, Doane missed an opportunity to tie the game but an offensive rebound found the hands of Brady Timm and he knocked down a 16 foot jumper with 4.2 seconds left. A three-point attempt for the Bluejays came up too strong as the game went into overtime.
In the extra five-minute stanza, Doane struck first on a Timm jumper at 4:32 to go. The two teams would go the next two minutes before a point was recorded, a put-back dunk for Tabor to tie the game. Cooper Sheldon gave the Tigers the lead back with 1:44 to play only to have the Bluejays tie the game on their next possession. Doane would struggle to find a basket as Tabor used a 6-0 run to take a 70-66 lead with 17 seconds left.
The Tigers had one last push starting with a 3-point basket from Sheldon with eight seconds left. After one made Tabor free throw, the Bluejays fouled which sent Doane to the free throw line. The first free throw was missed but went out of bounds off of Tabor to give the Tigers one last shot. The final shot, a 3-point attempt from the top of the key, hit the front of the rim and came up short for Doane.
Sheldon was joined by Josiah Gardiner with 14 points apiece. Timm added 12 points and Nick Saiz finished with 10 points. Sheldon recorded a double-double as he pulled in 11 rebounds, tying a career-high. Timm had a team-high four assists and Gardiner recorded three blocked shots.
Tabor received 24 points from Jack Voth with Thatcher McClure posting 11 points. The Bluejays shot 39.4-percent from the floor, 26-of-66, and hit six 3-point baskets. Doane shot 38.6-percent from the floor, 27-of-70, and made nine 3-point baskets. The free throw line advantage went to Tabor, 13-of-26, compared to 6-of-10 for Doane.
Next up for Doane will be a road trip to York on Saturday, November 4. Tipoff is set for 6:00 PM.
