Peru State Nips Men's Basketball in Closing Seconds
Men's Basketball hosted Peru State on Wednesday evening in Crete for their third home game of the season. However, the home court advantage slipped through the Tigers' fingers in the last seconds as the Bobcats snuck out a 68-67 win. Doane dropped to 2-2 on the season.
Peru State led much of the first half, leading by as much as seven points, 27-20, with 4:17 to play. Doane would answer at that point with a 7-0 run to tie the game and the two squads would go into the break tied at 32-all.
The second half started with an 8-2 PSC run to take a 40-34 lead. After a two-point exchange still left the Bobcats up six, Doane rattled off 15 straight points over a span of 4:04 to take a 51-42 lead. Peru State would chip away, tying the game at 61-all with 2:13 to go.
The Tigers regained the lead on a 3-point basket from Brady Timm only to have PSC go on a 4-0 run to take the lead back with 47 seconds to go. Timm answered with a layup and would convert a free throw to give Doane a 67-65 lead with 12.1 seconds left.
Following a Bobcat timeout, they were able to draw up a play that not only provided the game-tying basket but drew a foul with 4.4 seconds left. The free throw was converted and Doane was unable to get a clean shot attempt as time expired.
Timm led the Tigers with 19 points, scoring the team's final eight points of the game over the last five minutes. Cooper Sheldon added 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Josiah Gardiner posted 13 points and had two blocked shots.
The Tigers will have more than a week off before they return to action with the start of conference play. Doane will take on Dakota Wesleyan on Friday, November 17, at 6:45 PM in Mitchell, S.D.
