Men's Basketball Drops Opener of Fairfield Inn Bruin Classic
Men's Basketball opened the Fairfield Inn Bruin Classic on Friday in Bellevue as they took on Haskell (Kan.) in the first men's game of the day. A hot second half by the Indians erased a Tiger lead at the break as Haskell won 81-75.
There were eight lead changes in the opening half with Doane leading by as many as eight points following back-to-back 3-point baskets from Jack Wilson and Nick Saiz. Haskell responded with an 11-2 run to regain the lead, 21-20 with 7:52 to play. The Tigers closed the half with a 7-3 run to take a 33-31 lead at the break.
Haskell used a 17-5 run to open the second half to take a 10-point lead, 48-38. Caleb Hrabik kept the Tigers close by scoring eight of the team's 10 points over a four minute stretch as Doane pulled back to within five points. The Indians were able to extend their lead back to 11 points, 62-51 with 9:56 to play. A 14-4 run by Doane brought the Tigers back within a point, 66-65, with 5:21 to play. Doane would keep it close until Haskell used a 5-0 run in the final 80 seconds to secure the win.
Hrabik led the Tigers with 19 points while adding eight rebounds and two steals. Brady Timm finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Jack Wilson added 11 points for the Tigers. Cooper Sheldon had a team-high nine rebounds. Ben Renshaw matched Timm for team-high honors in assists with three.
Doane shot 41.8-percent from the floor for the game, including 10-of-22 (45.5-percent) from behind the arc. They were 19-of-26 at the free throw line. The Indians converted on 48.2-percent of their field goal attempts, going 7-of-17 (41.2-percent) from behind the arc. They shot 58-percent from the floor in the second half. Haskell was 20-of-27 at the free throw line.
The Tigers have a short turnaround as they take on Bellevue at 7:00 PM on Saturday, December 30.
