Men's Basketball Knocked Off in Overtime
Men's Basketball hosted No. 14 Northwestern on Saturday in Crete. Regulation was not enough time to decide the contest as the Red Raiders were able to escape with a 93-89 overtime win.
Three sets of runs by Northwestern in the first half allowed them to take a 43-26 lead at the break. Early on after Doane jumped in front, 4-2, the Red Raiders would counter with a 13-3 run to take the lead. They added a 10-0 run and a 9-0 run in the final five minutes of the half.
Doane opened the second half with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to single digits. With 10:20 to play, Cam Binder hit a 3-point basket and was fouled. After converting the free throw, Doane was within four points, 54-50. Jack Wilson and Caleb Hrabik hit 3-point baskets around a NWC basket and tied the game at 56-all.
Hrabik hit two free throws to give Doane the lead with 8:25 to play in regulation. Northwestern would tie the Tigers on four occasions over the next five minutes but Doane would not trail during the stretch. As the game advanced into the final minute, the Tigers led by two points. Brady Timm hit a jumper with 37 seconds to play to push the lead to four points. The Red Raiders came back with a 3-point shot to pull within one.
Timm hit two free throws to go back up three with 16 seconds left. Doane was able to get a stop defensively but was unable to convert a free throw with three seconds left. Following a timeout, Northwestern threw a pass three-quarters length of the court, made the catch and a pass to Alex Van Kalsbeek who hit a 3-point shot as time expired to force overtime with the score tied at 77.
In the extra stanza, Northwestern had a 6-0 run to break a 79-all tie. Doane would not go quietly as they cut the lead to one point but were unable to get the lead back. The Red Raiders were 6-of-6 at the free throw line in the overtime period to seal the win.
Timm led the Tigers in four statistical categories as he posted 25 points, five rebounds, eight assists, and three steals. River Johnston added 19 points while Hrabik finished with 11 points.
Doane will hit the road on Wednesday, January 24, as they take on Midland in Fremont. Tipoff is set for 7:45 PM.
