Men's Tennis Edges Mustangs; Sets Up Championship Battle on Saturday
Doane Men's Tennis needed to wait a day due to weather conditions to take on Morningside in GPAC play. On Sunday afternoon in Crete, the teams battled through the wind for a close battle that came down to the last match. In the final match on the court, Doane picked up a three-set victory to post a 4-3 win over the Mustangs. The Tigers will now play for the conference regular season title at home in the final match of the season.
In doubles action, Doane swept the three matches. Jorge Chevez and Federico Infante won 6-4 at 1-doubles. Jose Purizaca and Esteban Gutierrez won 6-2 at 2-doubles and the team of Diego Infante and Donat Beke won 7-6 (7-3) at 3-doubles.
Chevez won his 1-singles match, 6-3 and 7-5. Playing on three courts, the teams were tied 2-2 after the top three spots in the singles lineup was complete. Gutierrez gave the Tigers the lead back after a 6-4, 6-1, win at 4-singles but the Mustangs tied the match with a win at 6-singles. The final match fell on the shoulders of Diego Infante at 5-singles. After splitting the first two sets, Infante ran away in the final set to post a 5-7, 6-3, 6-0, victory.
Doane will take on Midland on Saturday, April 22, in Crete with first serve set for 12:00 PM.
