Turner Named GPAC Track Athlete of the Week
Doane Men's Track and Field hurdler Zach Turner has been tabbed the GPAC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week after his performance at the Graduate Classic hosted by the University of Nebraska this past weekend. This is the fifth time he has earned the honor. Turner broke the school record in the 60m hurdles as he placed second in the race.
Turner's race towards another meet title was held off by former Iowa and B1G Track Athlete of the Year Jaylan McConico, who competed unattached. After winning his heat in the prelims with a time of 8.09, he took to the track for the finals. McConico was able to get a good jump on his competition but would have Turner applying pressure until the finish line.
In the finals, McConico finished with a time of 7.78 to pick up the win. Turner was right on McConico's heels as he raced to a time of 7.91 to break the previous mark of 7.93 set in 2009. It was the first time for Turner to hit a time below eight seconds, joining Virgil Mitchell in the exclusive mark on the Doane record books.
Turner and the Tigers will have two meets this weekend, the Prairie Wolf Invite and the Polar Dog Invite.
