Bennett's Upset Sparks Men's Wrestling to Shutout
Doane Men's Wrestling took on their host, York (Neb.), on Friday evening in the second match of the day. The Tigers blanked the Panthers, 51-0, to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The match started with the biggest upset of the day at 125 for the Tigers as Hunter Bennett (SO/Tilden, Neb.) knocked off NAIA No. 15 Harley Williamson in extra time. Bennett held a 3-2 lead after the first period and 5-3 lead after two periods. He held a 7-4 lead late in the third period but Williamson was able to get a reversal and two-near fall points to take the lead as time expired. Bennett received a point for riding time, sending the match into overtime. Bennett was able to keep his composure and took Williamson down for the victory.
Daniel Vargas (SR/San Diego, Calif.) won at 133 over Caleb Freeman with a pin in 4:29. Vargas was in control of the match early on, picking up five takedowns in the first period. He was leading 15-5 when the pin occurred.
At 141, Baagii Boldmaa (SR/Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) won by pin in 3:48 over Julian Marrufo. He led 13-4 after the first period and was leading 19-6 when he pushed Marrufo's shoulders to the mat. Tristan Zamilpa (JR/Madera, Calif.) needed just 1:50 to pin Andy Garza to win at 149. He pinned Garza on the second takedown of the match.
Gabriel Keith (SO/Rio Rancho, N.M.) saw his first action of the season at 157 and picked up a 17-2 tech fall win over Dayton Fraser. He led 11-1 after the first period, picking up six near-fall points. Benjamin Dobler (SO/Torokszentmiklos, Hungary) received a forfeit win at 165 as York did not have a wrestler lined up for the match.
Michael Scarponi (JR/Temecula, Calif.) won at 174 over Isaiah Santana, 4-2. The two battled through a scoreless first period and Scarponi held a 1-0 lead after two periods. Santana tied the match with an escape in the third but would give the lead up with a second stalling warning, resulting in a penalty point. Scarponi then picked up a takedown for a 4-1 lead with Santana collecting an escape for the final point.
Garrett Cornwell (SR/Albion, Neb.) made his season debut and posted a pin in 1:07 at 184 over Dakwan Cash. Cornwell picked up an early takedown as Cash missed on an attempted takedown of his own. Following an escape, Cornwell was able to snag another takedown and was able to put Cash on his back for the pin.
Moving to the 197 match, Bradley Antesberger (SO/North Pole, Alaska) won by major decision, 10-2. The match was tight after three minutes of action with Antesberger leading 2-1. He added three points to his lead in the second period and scored five points in the third period. In the heavyweight match, Samuel Peterson (JR/Bonney Lake, Wash.) needed one takedown and pinned Americo Fuentes in 1:51.
