Men's Wrestling Opens Season with Win Over Avila

The match opened with a pair of major decision victories. Hunter Bennett (SO/Tilden, Neb.) started the day at 125 with an 11-2 victory over Ethan Moses. Bennett took a 2-0 lead after the opening period and pushed his advantage to 6-2 after five minutes of action. He added five points in the final period to close out the victory.
In the 133 match, Daniel Vargas (SR/San Diego, Calif.) posted an 18-7 victory over Tyler Johnson. He opened with four takedowns in the first period to take an 8-3 lead. He picked up a four-point near fall in the second period as he increased his lead to 14-5. Johnson had a takedown in the third period only to have Vargas escape and pick up a takedown as well to close out the scoring with riding time.
Baagii Boldmaa (SR/Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) did what all have come to enjoy watching when he takes the mat, putting on a takedown clinic against Luke Ward. Boldmaa had eight takedowns in the first period to take a 16-7 lead. He added four takedowns and a two-point near fall in a 1:04 of the second period to claim a tech fall win of 26-11.
Tristan Zamilpa (JR/Madera, Calif.) had one of the closer matches with Logan Johnson, picking up a 7-4 decision in the 149 division. He held a 2-1 lead after three minutes and a 5-2 lead through five minutes. In the final period, Johnson opened with an escape after starting in the down position but Zamilpa picked up a takedown to secure a four-point lead. Johnson was able to escape but the two would finish in the upright position for the final score.
The 157 match pitted Nate Lendt (FR/Des Moines, Iowa) and Karter Brink. After a scoreless first period, the two wrestlers would each pick up two points in the second period. Lendt recorded a takedown while Brink had a pair of escapes. Lendt opened the third period with an escape and followed with four takedowns as he finished with an 11-5 decision victory.
Benjamin Dobler (SO/Torokszentmiklos, Hungary) picked up a tech fall victory at 165 over Brad Mahoney, 23-8. He held a 10-4 lead after the first period and extended the lead to 21-8 after the second period. Dobler needed just 10 seconds to pick up a takedown in the third period to close out the win.
The matches' two pin falls fell in the next two matches. Michael Scarponi (JR/Temecula, Calif.) collected a second period pin of Jake Callahan at 174, picking up the pin in 4:39. NAIA No. 19 Daryus Webb picked up Avila's lone win on the day at 184, a pin over Chinges Tsermaa (JR/Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) who is wrestling up two weight classes to start the season.
Bradley Antesberger (SO/North Pole, Alaska) needed 5:12 to pick up a tech fall win at 197 over Corbin Katamura. He won 15-0, picking up 12 of his points on near fall points. In the heavyweight bout, Brandon Antesberger (JR/North Pole, Alaska) needed extra time to defeat Griffin Qualls. The two went into extra time, tied 1-1, as each player had picked up a point on an escape. Antesberger was able to avoid a takedown in overtime and circled around to the back of Qualls for the win.
