Men's Wrestling Competes at York Open
Doane Men's Wrestling competed in the York Open on Saturday with 22 wrestlers in action. The Tigers posted 43 wins and 15 Top Six finishes.
Breaking down the Tigers by weight class, they had four wrestlers at 125 with three placing in the Top Six. Russell Nickerson (SO/Quincy, Calif.) went 3-1 with all three wins by pin fall. His lone loss was to NAIA No. 11 Harley Williamson of York by major decision. Nickerson placed 3rd overall and in his quarterfinal match with Jason Bias (unattached), he broke the school record for quickest pin in the weight class at 25 seconds. The pin is tied for eighth-fastest in all weight classes on the record books.
Nathan Rizek (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) placed fifth as he went 3-1 on the day. His lone loss also came to Williamson. He recorded two pins and a tech fall. Landon Stocks (SO/Winterville, N.C.) was 2-2 on the day and placed sixth. His wins were by pin and major decision.
In the 133 division, Tristen Brown (FR/Sugar City, Idaho) made it to the championship match before falling to 11th-ranked Alex Pena. He went 3-1 with two pins and a decision victory. Devin Avedissian (FR/Temecula, Calif.) placed 5th with a 3-1 day. He lost to Pena but posted two tech fall wins and a major decision. Roberto Cordova (FR/Rio Rancho, N.M.) went 1-2 on the day as he picked up a pinfall victory in his opening match of the season.
Benjamin Miller (FR/Reno, Nev.) was the lone wrestler at 141 and he advanced to the championship match. He won twice by pin fall while adding a decision victory to go 3-1 on the day.
Quentyn Frank (FR/Kearney, Neb.) won the 149 division for Doane, going 4-0. He won his opening match by major decision and followed with a pinfall victory. His tightest match was in the semifinals where he won 7-4 over Andy Rojas of Hastings. Frank won 7-0 in the championship match.
In the 157 division, Gabriel Keith (SO/Rio Rancho, N.M.) went 4-0 to claim the title. He won twice by major decision and added a decision victory. In the championship, he pinned Jerome Cannon of Central Christian in 2:48.
Two Tigers went 2-1 to place in the 165 division. Arturo Salinas (SO/Papillion, Neb.) opened with a pinfall victory before dropping his semifinal match by a three-point decision. He won the 3rd place match with a 12-6 victory. Cooper Spaulding (FR/Martell, Neb.) dropped his opening match and then bounced back with two wins to take 5th place. He won by pinfall and then by an overtime decision.
Terungwa Unongo (SO/Jonesboro, Ga.) went 2-1 and placed 2nd at 184. He opened with a pinfall victory and followed with a decisive 11-4 decision in the semifinals before dropping the championship match. Chinges Tsermaa (JR/Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) went 3-1 and placed 3rd at 184. His opening bout ended with an overtime loss to the eventual bracket champion and then he rattled off three wins, two by decision and one by major decision.
Brandon Antesberger (JR/North Pole, Alaska) was the champion at heavyweight, going 4-0 on the day. He won his first two matches by pinfall, including an 18 second victory in the quarterfinals. The time is the third-fastest victory in program history and second-fastest for the heavyweight division. Samuel Peterson (JR/Bonney Lake, Wash.) went 2-0 and finished in second place, not competing in the championship by medical forfeit. Guillermo Duenas (SO/Hesperia, Calif.) placed 5th as he went 2-1 on the day. After dropping his opening match, he won with a pair of pins with both taking less than 75 seconds.
Next up for the Tigers will be the Friends University Open on November 5 in Wichita, Kansas.
