Men's Wrestling Claims Six Division Titles in Arizona

Doane Men's Wrestling flexed their strength and depth on Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Mile High Open. In 10 weight classes, the Tigers had finalists in eight, as they would roll up 62 wins on the day.

The following is a breakdown of each weight class for the Tigers:

125
Four wrestlers competed for Doane. Nathan Rizek (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) went 3-2 on the day, with all three wins by pin to take 4th overall. Hunter Bennett (SO/Tilden, Neb.) went 3-2 as he posted two wins by decision and one by pin to take 5th overall. Russell Nickerson (SO/Quincy, Calif.) went 1-2 with his win coming by decision. Landon Stocks (SO/Winterville, N.C.) went 0-2.

Doane sent four wrestlers to the mat in the division. Daniel Vargas (SR/San Diego, Calif.) went 4-0 to win the division. He won his first three matches by tech fall and picked up a 3-1 decision in the finals. Devin Avedissian (FR/Temecula, Calif.) went 5-1 to finish third overall. He recorded three wins by tech fall, one by major decision, and in his final match he was by sudden victory, 4-2. Tristen Brown (FR/Sugar City, Idaho) went 1-2 with a decision victory in his opening match. Roberto Cordova (FR/Rio Rancho, N.M.) went 0-2.

Baagii Boldmaa (SR/Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) and Benjamin Miller (FR/Reno, Nev.) tied for first as both wrestlers went 3-0 on the day to advance to the championship. They did not wrestle and Boldmaa received the medical forfeit win. Boldmaa won all three of his matches by tech fall, including a 23-7 win over NAIA No. 22 Steven Kroesen of Vanguard. Miller won two matches by pin and one by tech fall as both wrestlers showed their dominance over the division.

Tristan Zamilpa (JR/Madera, Calif.) and Nate Lendt (FR/Des Moines, Iowa) tied for first as both went 3-0 on the day. Lendt received the medical forfeit win in the championship match. Zamilpa won his matches with decision victories while Lendt had two pins and a major decision. Quentyn Frank (FR/Kearney, Neb.) went 4-2 and placed fifth overall. He won two matches by pin, one by decision, and one by forfeit.

Gabriel Keith (SO/Rio Rancho, N.M.) was the only wrestler in the division for the Tigers and went 2-1 to place second overall. He won his first match by pin and his second by an 8-6 decision to advance to the championship where he dropped the match by a pin.

Benjamin Dobler (SO/Torokszentmiklos, Hungary) advanced to the championship as he went 3-1 on the day. He opened with a 22-3 tech fall win followed by a pin in 1:34. Dobler used a 14-4 major decision to advance to the finals before he fell to No. 6 Keller Rock of Embry-Riddle (AZ), 17-4.

Three Tigers were in action with Chinges Tsermaa (JR/Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) coming away with the championship by going 4-0. He won all four matches by decision including a 3-2 victory over NAIA No. 8 Gerardo Hernandez of Vanguard in the championship. Michael Scarponi (JR/Temecula, Calif.) went 5-1 for the Tigers to place third overall. His lone loss came to No. 8 Hernadez, 5-3. Scarponi had two wins by pin, an injury victory, a 12-0 major decision, and a 5-1 decision. Austin Filliez (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) went 0-2.

Garrett Cornwell (SR/Albion, Neb.) went 4-2 and placed fifth for the Tigers. He won three matches by decision and one by pin. Terungwa Unongo (SO/Jonesboro, Ga.) was 1-2 with a victory by pin in his opening match.

Bradley Antesberger (SO/North Pole, Alaska) was the lone Tiger in the division and he went 4-0 to claim the title. He opened with an 11-3 major decision followed by an 18-2 tech fall. He won his final two matches by decision, 6-1 and 5-0, respectively.

Brandon Antesberger (JR/North Pole, Alaska) won the heightweight crown with a 3-0 record on the day. He recorded a 16-0 tech fall followed by a 4-2 decision in the semifinals. In the championship, Antesberger won by sudden victory, 8-4. Samuel Peterson (JR/Bonney Lake, Wash.) went 3-2 and placed fifth overall. He won by pin in his opening match followed by a decision victory. He added a forfeit win in the final match.
