Men's Wrestling Opens Concordia Duals with Win
Doane Men's Wrestling opened the Concordia Duals on Saturday with a match-up against Benedictine (Kan.). The Tigers won the first four matches and ran away for a 37-6 victory over the Ravens.
Nathan Rizek opened the action at 125 by collecting a pin over Charles Easterling in 1:35 for the Tigers. He picked up a takedown 50 seconds into the match before working his way to the finish.
Devin Avedissian took the mat at 133 against Kyle Smart. The match went the distance with Avedissian winning 6-2. He jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a takedown and two near-fall points in the opening minute. Smart earned his first point with an escapee midway through the period. Avedissian led 4-1 after the first and the lead held with a scoreless second period. In the third, Avedissian picked up two points with a reversal which was followed by an escape by Smart for the final point awarded in the match.
At 141, Baagii Boldmaa took the mat where he picked up a pin in 3:41 over Mason Scholtz. Boldmaa collected six takedowns in the opening period and held a 14-5 lead after three minutes. A takedown 15 seconds into the second period set up Boldmaa's pin.
Tristan Zamilpa defeated Daryl Easterling at 149 with a pin at the 5:41 mark. He recorded three takedowns in the opening period and led 8-2 after three minutes. Zamilpa started the second period with a reversal and followed with two takedowns to extend his lead to 14-4. In the third, Easterling started with an escape only to have Zamilpa pick up his sixth takedown of the match that would set up the pin.
The match at 157 started out with a bang between Gabriel Keith and Gino Camarca. Keith picked up a takedown 16 seconds into the match and collected six points on near-fall points to take an 8-0 lead. Camarca was able to work a reversal and collected four near-fall points just before the period ended, leaving Keith with an 8-6 lead. Camarca picked up a reversal and four near-fall points to take the lead after two periods, 12-8. A takedown by Camarca in the third would be the only points earned as he defeated Keith, 14-8.
Benjamin Dobler put the Tigers back in the win column with a 9-1 major decision over Cullen Bruner. Dobler picked up a takedown in the first and was awarded a penalty point as he led 3-0 after three minutes. Two stalling penalties added to Dobler's lead before he picked up a takedown and led 7-0 going into the final two minutes. Bruner started with an escape in the third only to have Dobler record a takedown with a minute left to close out the scoring.
A scoreless first period took place at 174 where Michael Scarponi and Jensen McDermott hooked up. Scarponi started the scoring in the second period with an escape and added to his lead with 15 seconds left as he notched a takedown for a 3-0 lead. In the third period, Scarponi held top control for the entire period and grabbed a riding time point for a 4-0 win.
Garrett Cornwell would go to overtime at 184 as he faced Tyson Albright. Cornwell held a 2-0 lead after the first with a takedown. The two were scoreless in the second period with Albright picking up two minutes of riding time. In the third, Cornwell picked up an escape with 53 seconds left for a 3-0 lead. Albright was able to get a takedown and held on to Cornwell for the final 27 seconds of action to earn a riding time point to tie the match. In overtime, Albright was able to get a takedown and four near-fall points before the match was stopped on a sudden-victory 9-3 decision.
In the 197 match, Bradley Antesberger battled through a scoreless first period before earning a 4-0 win over Garrett St. Clair. Antesberger picked up an escape seven seconds into the second period and led 1-0 going into the final two minutes of action. In the third, Antesberger collected two near-fall points while holding St. Claire to the mat for two minutes to earn a riding point as well.
Brandon Antesberger made quick work of Rodney Alger at 285 as he picked up a pin in 1:09. Antesberger collected a takedown at 52 seconds and forced Alger's shoulders to the mat to close out the team victory.
Doane improved to 7-0 on the season with the win.
