Early Individual Victories Sends Men's Wrestling to Team Win

Doane Men's Wrestling took on Rio Grande (Ohio) in their second match of the Concordia Duals on Saturday, defeating the Red Storm, 37-10.

The match opened with Nathan Rizek making quick work of Colin Greenwood at 125. Rizek had a takedown locked in seven seconds into the match and finished Greenwood with a pin at the 27-second mark.

Devin Avedissian also worked quickly in his victory over Lucas Chess, scoring 18 points in 93 seconds of action to win by tech fall. Avedissian had a takedown secured 20 seconds into the match and recorded four near-fall points on four separate occasions.

Baagii Boldmaa had the easiest match of the day for the Tigers, collecting a forfeit win at 141.

Benjamin Miller took on NAIA No. 23 Mitchell Freeman at 149, wrestling up a weight class. Miller struck first with a takedown 23 seconds into the match. Freeman would get a quick escape and get a takedown of his own along with four near-fall points to hold a 7-2 lead after one period. Freeman extended his lead in the second with three points and each wrestler garnered two points in the third period for a 12-4 Freeman victory.

Nate Lendt wrestled up a weight class at 157 and posted a 10-5 win over Westyn Moyer. Lendt recorded two takedowns and two near-fall points as he led 6-2 after the first period. Lendt started the second period in the bottom position and escaped for the only point of the period. In the third, both wrestlers recorded three points.

In the 165 match, Benjamin Dobler defeated Justin Bartee, 10-3. Dobler led 6-2 after the first period, collecting three takedowns. Bartee picked up the only point of the second period with an escape. Dobler out-scored his opponent 4-0 in the final period behind a takedown, a stalling penalty, and a riding time point.

A tech fall victory for Michael Scarponi followed as he defeated Isaac Gray, 16-1. He jumped out early with a takedown 25 seconds into the match. Following an escape by Gray, Scarponi added another takedown and four near-fall points to lead 8-1 after three minutes. In the second, Scarponi started in the bottom position and picked up an escape point. He added a takedown and a pair of two-point near-falls in the period. He had the bottom position to start the third and an escape ended the match.

Garrett Cornwell battled to a 4-2 victory at 184 over Anthony Parks. Cornwell picked up a takedown with two seconds left in the opening period for a 2-0 lead. Parks opened the second in the bottom position and escaped nine seconds into the period. Cornwell extended his lead with another takedown with Parks escaping later in the period with the score standing at 4-2. Cornwell was in the bottom position in the third and was unable to escape but also fought off any attempts by Parks to try and force a pin or near-fall scoring opportunity.

Bradley Antesberger picked up a pin at 3:29 over Aiden Greene in the 197 match. Antesberger led 4-1 after the first period behind two takedowns. He picked up a reversal early in the second before getting the pin.

In the final match, Samuel Peterson took on Bruce Wagers with Wagers collecting a pin at 6:59. The match was low-scoring early on with Wagers holding a 2-1 lead after two periods. Wagers would build a 7-2 lead before a late takedown resulted in a pin.

The team victory moved Doane's dual record to 8-0 on the year.
