Men's Wrestling Downs Central Methodist in Seward
Doane Men's Wrestling took on Central Methodist (Mo.) at the Concordia Duals on Saturday in their third match of the day. The Tigers had a midday break before facing off with the Eagles and it paid off as Doane posted a 32-15 win.
Nathan Rizek picked up his third pin of the day to open a match as he defeated Colton King in 2:55. Rizek had a takedown seven seconds into the match followed by four near-fall points. Following an escape by King, a takedown with 11 seconds left in the opening period set up Rizek's pin.
A Top 25 battle at 133 pitted No. 13 Devin Avedissian against No. 25 Jason Shaw. After a scoreless opening minute, Shaw was able to get a takedown and four near-fall points before Avedissian struck with a reversal. Trailing 6-2, Avedissian took the bottom position to start the second period and Shaw was able to work for a pin at the 4:42 mark of the match.
Baagii Boldmaa gave the Tigers the team lead with a 20-3 tech fall victory over Mitchell Huber. Boldmaa racked up 14 points in the opening period behind four takedowns and six points off of near-fall counts. He chose to start the second period in the neutral position (stand-up) and recorded a takedown nine seconds in, followed by four near-fall points to stop the match.
Nate Lendt followed with another tech fall victory, 19-3, over Xavien Jackson. In the opening minute, Lendt recorded a takedown and six near-fall points before Jackson hit a reversal and Lendt notched an escape for a 9-1 lead. Lendt hit a takedown and four near-fall points to push his lead to 15-1 with one minute left in the opening period. Jackson received an escape point only to have Lendt collect his third takedown of the opening period followed by two near-fall points.
At 157, Gabriel Keith shutout Lukas Eagle for an 8-0 major decision. The opening period was scoreless and Keith would be in the top position to start the second period. He was able to keep Eagle on the mat throughout the period to earn two minutes of riding time while also earning four points on a near-fall. The wrestlers started neutral in the third period and Keith picked up a takedown. He would add a point on a stalling penalty while earning a riding time point as well.
Benjamin Dobler had a come-from-behind win at 165 as he defeated Donald Griffin, 7-5. Griffin recorded a takedown with a minute left in the opening period but Dobler was able to escape eight seconds later. Dobler tied the match 2-2 in the second period with an escape point. Griffin regained the lead with an escape early in the third only to suffer a takedown which gave Dobler his first lead. Dobler would out-score Griffin 5-3 in the final period.
Chinges Tsermaa wrestled his first match of the day as he took on Jacob Henson in the 174 battle. Tsermaa recorded three takedowns in the opening period before his final one led to a pin at the 2:44 mark.
In the 184 match, Garrett Cornwell faced off against Sincere Osborne. Osborne picked up a 7-2 victory behind a 4-0 final period.
Bradley Antesberger, ranked No. 2, won a Top 20 battle as he defeated Elijah Hynes, ranked No. 20 at 197. The first period was scoreless and the lone point of the second period was an escape by Antesberger. In the final period, Hynes picked up an escape to tie the match at 1-1 but would be called for consecutive stalling penalties to give Antesberger the lead. Antesberger landed a takedown with five seconds left to cap the scoring in a 5-1 win.
The final match featured Samuel Peterson taking on No. 20 Brenden Shelton. Shelton picked up a takedown 31 seconds into the match and would work to record a pin at 2:16.
The team win moved the Tigers to 9-0 on the season.
