Men's Wrestling GPAC Win Streak Reaches 20

Doane Men's Wrestling traveled up the road to Seward to take on Concordia in a GPAC dual action on Friday evening. The Tigers had a couple of challenges on the night but came away with an unblemished mark on the day as they topped the Bulldogs, 44-0. The victory extended the program's conference dual win streak to 20 straight matches.

Hunter Bennett started the match by kicking off the 125 match. He fell behind early as Bryce Karlin picked up a quick takedown and four near-fall points for a 6-0 lead. Bennett worked an escape and picked up a takedown to cut the deficit in half before the 1st period concluded. The 2nd period saw Bennett pick up a takedown to pull within a point and then finish off Karlin with a pin at 4:23 of the match.

At 133, Devin Avedissian had no problem with Grant Wells as he posted a 15-0 tech fall victory. Avedissian led 10-0 after the 1st period with a takedown and a pair of four-point near-falls. He landed a takedown and two near-fall points for a 14-0 lead after five minutes. In the 3rd period, Avedissian took the bottom position and picked up an escape to end the match.

A Top 20 battle ensued at 141 as Baagii Boldmaa took on No. 17 Creighton Baughman. Baughman gave Boldmaa an early challenge but it did not take long for Boldmaa to figure out his opponent and roll to a 20-5 tech fall win. Boldmaa recorded five takedowns and two four-point near-falls to take an 18-4 lead after the 1st period. Following an escape by Baughman, Boldmaa picked up one final takedown to end the match.

Nate Lendt posted a 14-8 victory over Jeaven Scdoris at 149. Lendt jumped out early with a takedown and four near-fall points. He allowed two escapes while adding two more takedowns for a 10-2 lead after three minutes of action. Both wrestlers picked up three points in the 2nd period with an escape and a takedown each. Scdoris scored three points in the final period to cap the scoring.

Tristan Zamilpa has moved up a weight class to 157 and posted a major decision victory over Tommy Wentz, 15-6. The 1st period went back-and-forth as Zamilpa started the scoring with a takedown. Wentz followed with an escape and a takedown to take the lead but Zamilpa would record an escape to tie the match at 3-3. Zamilpa began to pull away as he added two takedowns before the 2nd period ended for an 8-4 lead. In the final period, Zamilpa recorded three takedowns and a riding time point to close out the scoring.

In a rematch from earlier this year, Benjamin Dobler faced off against Issiah Burks. Burks recorded an 8-6 win back in December at the Conner/Oppenheim Open but on this night, it was all Dobler. The 1st period saw Dobler pick up two takedowns as he built a 4-1 lead. In the 2nd period, Dobler recorded a takedown and four near-fall points to push his lead to 10-1. The final period was a scoreless stalemate with Dobler receiving a riding time point at the completion of the match for an 11-1 major decision.

Chinges Tsermaa had a tight battle with Jose Sanchez before pulling away in the final period for a 17-6 major decision at 174. Tsermaa led 4-1 after the 1st period behind two takedowns. He extended the lead to 6-2 after the 2nd period. In the 3rd period, Tsermaa recorded five takedowns as he extended his lead and added a point for riding time.

At 184, Garrett Cornwell took on Garret Moser with Cornwell posting a 12-2 major decision. The 1st period was low scoring with Cornwell holding a 2-1 lead. He extended the lead with an escape and a takedown in the 2nd period for a 5-1 advantage. Moser started the 3rd period with an escape to cut into the Tiger lead but Cornwell picked up a late takedown and recorded four near-fall points as the period came to a close to pick up bonus points on the team score.

Concordia would send another ranked wrestler to the mat at 197 as Logan Davidson came in with a No. 25 rating. Cael Jordan wrestled up a weight class for the Tigers and looked like he might be over matched early on as Davidson picked up a takedown seven seconds into the match. Jordan was unable to escape as Davidson recorded 2:53 of riding time. The 2nd period saw Davidson choose the bottom position and it would be the turning point of the match. Jordan did not allow his opponent out of his grasp and nearly pinned Davidson as he collected four near-fall points to take a 4-2 lead while erasing two minutes of riding time. The 3rd period had Jordan take the top position as he hoped to maintain control of Davidson. The Bulldog wrestler would work his way into a reversal to tie the match at 4-4 only to have Jordan quickly reverse as well to regain the lead 6-4. Time would run out as Jordan finished off the upset victory, 6-4.

The final match at 285 pitted Brandon Antesberger against Cy Renney. Antesberger posted two takedowns and four near-fall points as he led 8-1 after the first three minutes. He would take the bottom position to start the 2nd period and quickly reversed position on Renney and picked up a pin 10 seconds into the period to close out the Tiger shutout.

Doane will return to the mat on Tuesday, January 17, as they host Hastings at 7 PM. The Tigers will honor their seniors prior to the match.
