Mustangs Snap Men's Wrestling Win-Streak to Claim GPAC Duals Title
Doane Men's Wrestling met No. 14 Morningside in the final match of the GPAC Duals with the conference title on the line. The Tigers were unable to pick up a key win in the middle matches as the Mustangs snapped Doane's conference win-streak with an 18-16 win.
The match opened with Daniel Vargas picking up a 3-2 decision at 125 over Evan Shell. Vargas scored all three of his points in the second period. In the 133 match, Devin Avedissian dropped an 8-3 decision to NAIA No. 11 Taylor Vasquez.
Doane regained the team lead with back-to-back wins. Baagii Boldmaa defeated Nicholas Walters by major decision, 19-7. It would be the only match that was completed that did not end in a decision. Nate Lendt picked up a big win at 149 as he defeated NAIA No. 8 John Diener, 3-2. The difference came in the first period when Lendt recorded the only takedown of the match.
The tide turned on the Tigers at 157. Tristan Zamilpa took on No. 21 Noah Styskal. Zamilpa was up 5-3 when an injury to Zamilpa occurred and he was not permitted to continue. The Mustangs received six team points for the match. In the next match, Morningside went in front in the team score with a 10-7 win by NAIA No. 18 Zander Ernst over Benjamin Dobler.
Michael Scarponi took on Caleb Connor at 174 and dropped a 4-2 decision. Chinges Tsermaa dropped a 3-0 decision to NAIA No. 7 Hayden Wempen at 184.
Doane still had a chance to rally, trailing 18-10 with two matches left but would need bonus points to be earned. The Mustangs were able to avoid those extra points as the Tigers picked up decision wins.
Bradley Antesberger defeated Alex Vandyke, 7-3, at 197. Brandon Antesberger defeated NAIA No. 12 Hunter DeJong, 4-3.
Despite the loss, the Tigers established a record that may take a long time to break in the conference ranks. Doane allowed 27 team points in their eight GPAC duals this year, crushing the previous record of 43 team points allowed by Dana in 2006-07. Dana's mark was set in five duals, showcasing the Tigers' dominance in the GPAC this year.
