Boldmaa Reaches 100th Straight Win; Four Advance to Saturday's Action
Doane Men's Wrestling concluded Day 1 of the NAIA Championships on Friday with four wrestlers advancing to the All-American round of action. The Tigers are currently sitting in seventh place in the team standings.
Recapping the Tigers' performances in order by weight class, Daniel Vargas went 2-2 in the tournament. He opened with a 6-2 win over Landon Smith of Embry-Riddle before falling to the 14th-seed, Riley Siason of Menlo, 2-0. He bounced back with a 7-6 decision over Seth I'nama of Briar Cliff but was knocked out of the tournament by 6-seed Dennis McNeal of Brewton-Parker, 16-0.
Devin Avedissian went 2-2 at 133 for the Tigers. He opened with a 6-1 victory over 12-seed Jason Shaw of Central Methodist. Avedissian dropped a 16-1 tech fall to 5-seed Matt Gimson of Indiana Tech in his next match. In the consolation round, he topped Benjamin Schmitz of Morningside, 8-3, before falling to 13-seed Alex Pena of Wayland Baptist, 5-2.
Baagii Boldmaa went 3-0 on the day and advanced to the semifinals at 141 on Saturday. He opened with a 14-5 major decision over Dawson Bates of Reinhardt. In the second round, he defeated 16-seed Jaxon Morlan of Eastern Oregon, 11-6, in a match that was stopped several times due to a bloody nose for Morlan. In the quarterfinals, Boldmaa defeated 8-seed Asa Garcia of Marian, 7-3, to pick up his 100th consecutive victory.
In the 149 bracket, Nate Lendt advanced to Saturday's action by going 3-1 on the day. He opened with a win over Steven Weathers of Missouri Valley, 15-6. In the next round, he defeated 8-seed John Diener of Morningside, 10-4. Lendt was defeated by pin in the quarterfinals by 1-seed Ryan Moore of Thomas More. He came back in the consolation round to post a 7-1 win over 14-seed Dayton Marvel and move into Day 2.
At 157, Tristan Zamilpa went 0-2 on the day. He dropped his opening match to Kael Bunce of William Penn, 13-0, and lost his second match to Thade Radosa of Cornerstone, 3-2.
Benjamin Dobler went 0-2 in his tournament debut in the 165 bracket. He dropped his first match to 9-seed Gavin Smith of Campbellsville by pin and was defeated by Braeden Baller of Texas Wesleyan, 7-2.
Chinges Tsermaa advanced to Saturday's action with a 3-1 day at 174. He opened with a 6-4 decision over Joey Ewalt of Baker before dispatching 11-seed Michael Long of Cumberland, 10-3. In the quarterfinals, Tsermaa lost on a stalling call in overtime to 3-seed Gerardo Hernadez of Vanguard. He bounced back with an 8-5 win over 16-seed Brice Parks of Campbellsville to move on to Day 2.
Michael Scarponi took a tough 0-2 day for the Tigers at 174. He dropped his opening match to 8-seed Cole Tenety of Reinhardt, 3-1. In this consolation match, he was defeated in overtime, 6-4, by Rylin Burns of Montana State-Northern.
In the 197 bracket, Bradley Antesberger advanced to Saturday's action with a 4-1 day. He opened with a 19-4 victory over Levid Rodriguez of Campbellsville. The second round saw 15-seed Nathan Critchfield of Indiana Tech pick up a 3-1 overtime win over Antesberger. He bounced back with a 4-1 decision over Jacob Brandt of Indiana Tech followed by a 9-1 win over Kolton Kammeyer of Midland. In his final match of the day, he defeated Andrew Herrera of Southern Oregon, 6-0.
Brandon Antesberger went 1-2 for the Tigers at 285. He opened with a 9-5 victory over Justin Darter of Ottawa. In the second round, he lost the rubber match with 8-seed Hunter DeJong of Morningside, 3-1. In the consolation bracket, David Toese of Graceland picked up a 7-3 win.
Day 2 starts at 10 AM on Saturday as the wrestlers will complete the All-American rounds.
