Beauperthuy, Grape Win Titles at Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open
Men's Wrestling hosted the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open on Saturday inside Fuhrer Field House. The Tigers brought home six Top 6 finishes in the open division and one in the amateur division.
NAIA No. 5 Tyson Beauperthuy won the 184 division with a 4-0 day. He won his first three matches by pin. In the opening match, he defeated Trey Graves of Graceland in 34 seconds. He followed with a pin over Nebraska Wesleyan's Emilio Chavez in 2:03. His semifinal match was a pin of Hunter Weimer of Concordia in 1:20. The championship match was a NAIA Top 10 battle as Beauperthuy defeated No. 8 Brett Bober of Baker in an 8-4 decision.
Kasten Grape had a big day at 197, setting a record in his opening match and following with three wins over ranked wrestlers for a 4-0 day. He posted the quickest pin in the weight class for the program with a victory in 19 seconds over Caleb Schwerdtfeger of Nebraska Wesleyan. In the quarterfinals, Grape defeated NJCAA No. 1 Hunter Hall of Carl Albert (Okla.) by a 5-1 decision. He then pinned NAIA No. 23 John Schuttler of Graceland in 3:46. In the championship, Grape edged out No. 13 Garavous Kouekabakilaho by decision, 6-5.
In the 125 bracket, Russell Nickerson picked up a win by pin, defeating Wyatt Engwicht of Dickinson State in 4:36. Hunter Bennett recorded one win by pin as well in the bracket, defeating Dakota Wesleyan's Will Farren in 2:04.
Devin Aveddissian placed sixth in the 133 division. He opened with a tech fall win, 20-4, over Quinton Chavez of Nebraska Wesleyan. He dropped his next match to NAIA No. 12 Dillon Witt of Missouri Baptist by decision, 5-4. Avedissian bounced back with a 1-0 win over Daryl Mills of Missouri Baptist and then won in overtime over NAIA No. 6 Kolby Encinas of Oklahoma Wesleyan, 5-3. He followed with a 7-2 decision over Grand View's Luke Fogleman before knocking off NJCAA No. 3 Paul Ruff of Iowa Western CC in overtime, 6-3. He hit the six-match limit and was unable to wrestle in the matches to determine placing.
Nathan Rizek added two wins at 133. He posted a 21-5 tech fall win over Riley Harger of Graceland and a pin over Brendan Ferenchik of William Penn in 1:33.
In the 157 division, Benjamin Miller won three matches on his way to a fourth place finish. He opened with a pin of Jacob Knowles of Friends in 2:18. Miller then defeated Dylan Whitt of Grand View by decision, 8-6. In the semifinals, he dropped his match to the defending Big 12 champion Paniro Johnson of Iowa State by tech fall, 20-5. He bounced back with a pin in 48 seconds over Gino Camarca of Benedictine. Miller dropped the third place match to De'ontray Gartrell, wrestling unattached, by tech fall, 24-9.
Benjamin Dobler picked up one win at 157 as he dropped down to the weight class. He defeated Cael Palmer of Grand View by tech fall, 18-2.
In the 184 division, Chase Stieb added a third place finish to give the Tigers two placers in the bracket. He opened with a pin of Kohlter Mariscal of Graceland in 1:12 and then advanced with a medical forfeit win over NAIA No. 21 Kelvin Coker. He dropped his semifinal match to Bober of Baker by pin only to rebound for a win by pin over Connor Rinn of Midland in 59 seconds. He defeated Weimer of Concordia in the third place match by an 8-3 decision.
Eli Criblez brought home a third place finish in the heavyweight division with four wins on the day. He opened with a pin of Dawson Schwerdtfeger from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1:08. Criblez then defeated NAIA No. 24 Tanner Hawkins of York by a 7-3 decision. He dropped his semifinal match to Kenneth Copley of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) by major decision, 11-0. In his next match he topped Juan Camacho of Dickinson State, 2-1.
The third place match came against Brandyn Van Tassell of Nebraska. After a scoreless first period, Criblez took a 1-0 lead with an escape. Van Tassell equaled the match in the third period with an escape. He would take down Criblez to go in front 4-1 but the Tiger wrestler quickly turned a reversal and was able to pin Van Tassell in 6:37.
In the amateur division, Tristen Brown and Tyler Caldwell each collected a win at 133. Brown defeated Joe Frazier of Graceland by tech fall, 18-1, while Caldwell topped Aaron Ohnoutka of Iowa Western CC by decision, 12-8.
Quentyn Frank won three matches at 141, starting out with a pin of Kason Mitchell of Carl Albert in 4:13. He defeated teammate Mario Evans by tech fall, 15-0, and Kael Glenn of Ellsworth CC by tech fall, 17-0. Evans had one win in the bracket, defeating Garrett Head of Indian Hills CC by pin in 2:39.
Cooper Spaulding placed fourth for the Tigers at 165. He won his first three matches, starting with a 9-4 decision over Johnathan Vincent of York. He then pinned Samuel Tackett of Bethany in 1:47 and Braden Peglow of William Penn in 1:02. After dropping his semifinal match, he bounced back with a 10-6 win over Cayden Lamb of Southeast CC. He dropped the third place match by pin.
Preston Gautier won three matches, starting with a pin of Jabez Anderson of Midland in 1:29. After dropping a match, he bounced back with a tech fall win over Braydon Forehand of Hastings, 15-0. He pinned Cooper Dunn of Missouri Baptist in 6:17 as well.
Next up for the Tigers will be a conference dual at Midland on December 7 at 7 PM in Fremont.
