Men's Wrestling Drops Top 10 Battle at NWCA National Duals
Men's Wrestling, ranked No. 5, battled with No. 6 Campbellsville in a consolation bracket match at the NWCA National Duals on Friday. In a battle of the Tigers, it would be Campbellsville picking up a 22-19 win as the dual came down to the final match.
The opening match went to Campbellsville by decision with Doane coming back with a tech fall win at 133 from Devin Avedissian. He won 16-0. The Tigers dropped their next match by tech fall but Nate Lendt came back to tie the match for Doane at 149. Lendt posted a 4-1 win over NAIA No. 23 Nick Moore to tie the team score at 8-all.
Campbellsville regained the lead with a major decision win at 157 in a battle of Top 15 wrestlers. At 165, Campbellsville's No. 2-ranked wrestler, Shadrick Stone, won by pin to give CU a 18-8 lead with four matches to go.
Michael Scarponi earned a win at 174 as he defeated No. 8 Brice Parks, 6-1. Tyson Beauperthuy followed with a major decision win at 184. He defeated No. 14 Chandler Woenker, 11-1. Bradley Antesberger gave the Tigers a 19-18 lead with a win at 197. He collected a major decision win, 10-1.
In the heavyweight match, Kasten Grape wrestled up a weight class and gave up plenty of size to No. 8-ranked Gabe Craig. Grape put forth a valiant effort but the size difference was too much to overcome in a 13-2 major decision in favor of Craig. The match was not decided until the final seconds as the Campbellsville wrestler was able to slip out of a near pin by Grape just before his shoulders were about to touch the mat.
Doane will return to action on Saturday as they take on No. 10 Ottawa at 11:00 AM.
