Beauperthuy Wins U.S. Nationals Title

Tyson Beauperthuy, a red-shirt sophomore this past year on the Doane Men's Wrestling team, competed this week at the U23 U.S. National Championships in Geneva, Ohio, at the Spire Institute. Beauperthuy competed in the 87kg bracket in Greco-Roman Wrestling.

He entered the tournament unseeded as one of 17 wrestlers in his bracket. He received a bye in the first round, advancing to the Round of 16 where he took on 6-seed Landry Barker from the Dubuque Wrestling Club. Barker wrestled this past year at Loras College in Iowa. Beauperthuy landed a four-point takedown 14 seconds into the match as he was on his way to an 8-0 win in 53 seconds.

In the Quarterfinal Round, Beauperthuy took on 3-seed Jared Voss, an all-conference wrestler at Coe College in Iowa. Voss earned the first two points only to get thrown by Beauperthuy and fall behind 7-2 before the match was stopped at 1:31 for a pin.

Beauperthuy took on 2-seed Evan Grazzini, a member of the two-time NCWA National Championship team at Bellarmine University in Kentucky. The Tigers' wrestler landed a four-point takedown in the opening seconds and pinned Grazzini in 22 seconds.

The championship match was a best-of-3 series against MacAron Kukowski from the Minnesota Storm Wrestling Club. Kukowski had previously trained at the Olympic Training site at Northern Michigan University and also competes in mixed martial arts (MMA). In the first match of their series, Beauperthuy earned a 5-0 lead after three minutes of action. He added a two-point takedown in the second period to post a 7-0 win.

In the second match of the day, avoided a couple of takedown attempts while landing three of his own for a 6-0 lead after the first period. He picked up a takedown 58 seconds into the second period to earn an 8-0 stoppage win in 3:58.

Beauperthuy earned the national title and will represent the United States at the Pan-American Games in Rionegro, Columbia, from June 21-22. He may also be called upon to represent the U.S.A. at the World Championships in Tirana, Albania, from October 21-27.
