Men's Wrestling Season Opens at Falcon Open

Men's Wrestling opened the 2024-25 season on Saturday morning in Wichita, Kan., at the Falcon Open. By the end of the evening with more than 11 hours of wrestling taking place on the mats, Doane wrestlers had combined for 74 wins and two bracket titles in the two divisions (Elite and Amateur).

In the Elite Division, Tyson Beauperthuy won the 184 bracket with four wins on the day. After a first round bye, he defeated Matthew Rodriguez (NCAA D2 Fort Hays St.) by fall in 3:45. He followed up with a win over Lucas Hageman (Grand View) by tech fall, 21-5. In the semifinals, he defeated Hunter Mullin (unattached), a former NCAA D2 wrestler at Western Colorado, by decision, 8-5. In the finals, Beauperthuy topped Seth Sarasua (NCAA D2 Central Oklahoma) by major decision, 13-2.

Kasten Grape took Third Place for the Tigers at 197. He started action with a pair of pins, defeating Gustavo Renteria (Friends) in 1:36 and Elijah Davis (Grand View) in 0:42. In the semifinals, Grape was edged out by a 13-9 decision. He bounced back with a win over NAIA No. 21 John Bray (Wayland Baptist) by fall in 1:45. In the final match, Grape defeated NCAA D2 No. 8 Tereus Henry (Fort Hays St.) by decision, 9-4.

In other Elite Division brackets, Matthew Terreance won three matches on the day at 133. He posted a fall victory in 1:23 over Ryan McNeel (Avila) and a major decision win of 14-1 over Johnny Burnette (Northwestern). In the consolation bracket, he defeated NAIA No. 8 Dalton Witt (Missouri Baptist) by a 5-0 decision.

Ben Miller won four matches at 157 for the Tigers. He started the day with back to back pins, topping Chase Koehler (NCAA D2 Fort Hays St.) in 2:12 and Colin Sharp (Graceland) in 1:38. In the consolation bracket, he defeated Grant Gober (NCAA D2 Central Oklahoma) by a 12-3 major decision and Hunter Dietrich (NCAA D2 Newman) by fall in 0:47.

In the 165 bracket, three different Tigers picked up a win apiece. Cooper Spaulding defeated Stephen Dickerson (Graceland) by fall in 6:24. Kody Hahn topped Jackson Jones (Saint Mary, KS) by fall in 5:56. Edward Rameriez defeated Hunter Harris (NCAA D2 Fort Hays St.) by a 4-3 decision.

In the 174 bracket, Benjamin Dobler defeated Bryce Dauphin (NCAA D2 Central Oklahoma) by a 3-2 decision. Kolton Kammeyer won three matches in the 184 bracket. He topped Joseph Teguia (Graceland) by a 5-3 decision, Trenton Blomquist (Embry-Riddle) by medical forfeit, and Jairo Caceres (NCAA D3 St. Thomas, MN) by a 1-0 decision.

In the 285 bracket, Angelo Franco collected a win against Isaiah Causey (Friends) by tech fall, 19-3.

The Amateur Division was composed of freshmen and sophomores. Liam Knerr won two matches at 125. He defeated Caden Betz (Carl Albert) by pin in 0:48. He also defeated Keaton Rottinghaus (Pratt) by a 14-8 decision.

Shane Sherrill and Tyler Caldwell collected multiple wins in the 133 bracket. Sherrill started action with a 21-5 tech fall win over Logan Schroeder (Northwestern). He added a 7-6 decision over Payton Harger (Graceland) and a pin over Levi Glover (Pratt) in 5:49. Caldwell defeated Savieon Garrison (Colby) in school record time for the weight class, pinning his opponent in 22 seconds. He added a medical forfeit win as well over Couper Deckard (Central Methodist). 

William Howard won a match in the bracket, defeating Travis Reidy (unattached) by decision, 15-11. Ben Stanley added a win over Tyler Peterson (Wayland Baptist) by major decision, 14-3.

Gavin Smith took Third Place in the 149 bracket. He won by injury stoppage in the first match against Jaquwan Tillman and followed with an overtime win, 6-3, against Eric Streeter (Labette). Following a loss in the quarterfinals, he bounced back with a win over Draven Wright (NCAA D2 Drury) by fall in 6:37. Smith then defeated Brayden Eikermann (Missouri Baptist) by a 9-5 decision. He topped Wesley Madden (unattached) by a 10-3 decision to move into the Third Place match where he picked up a medical forfeit win over Damon Ingram (unattached).

Jesse Cooper added three wins at 149 as well. He picked up a forfeit win against Hoakea Salter (Graceland) and a medical forfeit over Dylan Reed (Cowley). He then defeated Alec McDoufett (unattached) by decision, 13-8.

Kaihikapukalaimoku Cobb-Adams won two matches at 157. He defeated Elijah Marley (Friends) by pin in 1:09 and Sebastian Nunez (Central Methodist) in 2:17.

In the 165 bracket, Vincent Donatelle posted the second fastest pin in program history with a 15 second victory over Bryan Perez (Waldorf). He added a pin over Kash Alley (Colby) in 1:23. Preston Gautier collected two wins as well. He defeated Rhett Briggs (Labette) by fall in 1:22 and Anthony Smith (NCAA D2 Drury) in 1:28.

Jaren Jackson picked up the 197 bracket title with a 5-0 record in the meet. He opened with a pin of Nathan Adras (Briar Cliff) in 2:36. He then defeated Matthew Marcum (Labette) by a 3-2 decision. In the quarterfinals, Jackson won by a pin in 4:34 over Rylan McClure (Oklahoma City) and advanced to the finals with a medial forfeit win over Ronin Wunsch (unattached). In the championship match, he won 4-1 in overtime over Kaleb Grove (Northwestern).

Next up for the Tigers will be the first home dual of the season as Midland comes to Crete to begin GPAC action. The first match on Friday, November 8, is scheduled shortly after 7:00 PM in the Haddix Center.
