Five Bracket Titles Claimed by Men's Wrestling
Men's Wrestling hosted the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open on Saturday in Crete. The Tigers had wrestlers compete in two divisions covering 15 of the 20 weight classes as they recorded 73 wins and five bracket championships.
In the Open Division, the Tigers had 15 wrestlers compete. At 125, Hunter Bennett went 3-2 with two wins by decision and one by pin. Russell Nickerson added two wins (2-2), one by tech fall and one by pin. In the 133 bracket, Matthew Terrence went 2-2 with a pin and a tech fall win. Tristen Brown went 1-2 at 141, picking up a win by tech fall.
In the 157 bracket, Ben Miller went 4-0 on his way to the title. He opened with a pin over Rico Robles (Arizona Christian) in 1:37 followed by a pin over NAIA No. 14 AuShaud Evans (Reinhardt) in 3:28. In the semifinals, he defeated NAIA No. 12 Logan Hancey (Embry-Riddle, AZ) by a 5-0 decision. He received a medical forfeit victory in the championship match.
At 165, Edward Ramirez went 2-2 with a win by decision followed by a tech fall win over NAIA No. 19 Jayden Terronez (St. Ambrose). Chase Stieb went 2-2 at 174, picking up a win by decision and one by pin. Benjamin Dobler went 3-1 and finished second at 174. All three wins came by decision, including a victory over NAIA No. 17 Johnathan Ward (Texas Wesleyan).
Tyson Beauperthuy claimed his third title of the year in winning the 184 bracket. He opened with a pin over Triston Vande Velde (Bethany) in 2:10 and received a medical forfeit win in the quarterfinals. He defeated Grand View's Braden Anderson by tech fall in the semifinals and the Vikings' Jameel Coles by major decision in the championship.
In the 197 bracket, Bradley Antesberger went 3-1 and took second place. He won his opening match by tech fall to pick up his 100th career victory at Doane. He won in the quarterfinals by tech fall as well and posted a decision victory in the semifinals over Grand View's Elijah Davis. Kasten Grape went 5-1 in the bracket and took third place. He opened with a pin followed by two tech fall victories. He added a major decision win and a no contest win for third. Eli Criblez went 2-2 at 285, picking up a win by major decision and a win by decision. Angelo Franco posted a win by pin at 285 as well.
In the Amateur Division, Brian Peck went 4-1 and placed second at 125. He won his first match by pin and followed with two matches won by injury default in the second period of each. He added a win by major decision in the semifinals. Liam Knerr went 2-2 with a tech fall and a pin. Evan Slaughter collected a win by pin for his lone victory.
Anthony Harris took second place with a 4-1 day at 133. He won his first two matches by pin, one in 59 seconds and the other in 2:56. He added a tech fall win and a decision victory. Shane Sherrill went 5-1 and placed third. He had two wins by major decision, two by decision, and one by medical forfeit. In his final match, he was able to avenge his one-point loss from earlier in the day with a two-point win. Tyler Caldwell went 3-2, picking up a win by decision, by tech fall, and by pin.
Gavin Smith won the 149 bracket with a 5-0 record. He opened with a decision victory over Joshua Zeman (St. Ambrose), 5-0. He picked up a tech fall win, 15-0, over Albert Ambriz (Arizona Christian) and a pin over Ross Bratetic (Iowa Western CC) in 4:21 to advance to the semifinals. He took the semis match by a 10-6 decision over Braxton Peacher (Iowa Western CC). In the finals, he defeated teammate Kaihikapukalaimoku Cobb-Adams, 2-0. Cobb-Adams went 4-1 with two wins by decision, one by major decision, and one by pin.
Vincent Donatelle won the 165 bracket with a 5-0 day. He opened with a pin of Timothy Hubers (Northwestern) in 1:59 and Brock Moore (Grand View) in 5:00. In the quarterfinals, he topped Noah Sample (Baker) by tech fall, 20-5. Donatelle won by an 8-6 decision over Michael Foster (Briar Cliff) in the semifinals. For the championship, he defeated Gavin Zoucha (Wayne State) by pin in 4:15.
Also at 165, Preston Gautier went 4-2. He had three wins by decision and one by pin. Thure Johnson went 2-2 at 174. He had two wins by pin with times of 2:39 and 1:40.
In the 197 bracket, Jaren Jackson went 5-0 to win the title. He opened with a pin over Braeden Stotts (Missouri Baptist) in 3:24. He followed with a tech fall win over Jamar Toston (Graceland) before pinning Caleb Schwerdtfeger (Southeast CC) in 2:37. In the semifinals, Jackson topped Ezequiel Palos (Carl Albert) by a 5-2 decision. For the title, he won 4-0 over Corey Hyatt (Southeast CC).
Next up for the Tigers will be their final dual of 2024 as they travel to Seward to take on Concordia in a GPAC matchup on December 13.
