Men's Wrestling Drops Tight Top 10 Battle
Men's Wrestling faced off with No. 5 Embry-Riddle on Saturday morning in Cedar Falls, Iowa, at the NWCA NAIA National Duals. The final outcome would not be decided until the last match between the two Top 10 teams with the Eagles posting a 22-18 victory.
Several Top 25 match-ups occurred on the mat in the match, starting at 125 where No. 22 Hunter Bennett took on No. 4 Landon Smith. Smith picked up the win by decision, 6-0. Doane got on the board at 133 as Matthew Terrence won by tech fall, 15-0. Embry-Riddle regained the lead with a win at 141 that paired No. 13 Devin Avedissian against the Eagles No. 14 Christian Lopez. Lopez won by major decision, 15-2.
At 149, No. 1 Nate Lendt faced No. 6 Jonah Chew. Lendt picked up the decision victory, 4-3. Ben Miller, No. 11, faced No. 13 Logan Hancey at 157. Hancey was able to collect a major decision, 12-2. Following an Eagles win at 165, No. 16 Benjamin Dobler took on No. 7 Danill Gorshkov at 174. Gorshkov scored points late to steal the win by decision, 10-6, to give the Eagles a nine point lead, 19-8.
Doane battled back with a pair of wins starting with Tyson Beauperthuy at 184 winning by tech fall, 22-4. Kasten Grape won at 197 by tech fall, 15-0, to pull the Tigers within a point in the team score. At heavyweight, No. 24 Eli Criblez faced off against No. 2 Kenneth Copley. Copley would pick up a hard fought win, 5-0, after picking up three points in the last five seconds of the match.
The Tigers will take on No. 17 Missouri Valley in the seventh place match at 1 PM.
