Softball Sweeps Bethel to Cap Kansas Swing

Softball took on Bethel on Saturday to cap their three-day trip through Kansas. The Tigers took the opener, 9-6, and came from behind in game two for a 7-5 win. The sweep lifted the team record to 6-4 after going 5-1 over the three-day stretch.

Game One
Doane jumped out to a 4-1 lead through two and a half innings. Jadyn Hunt and Marisa Marquez had RBIs in the first inning while Emma Sorensen had a two-run double in the third inning.

Bethel came back with five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-4 lead. After a pair of scoreless innings, Doane struck with five runs in the sixth inning to retake the lead behind three hits and three Thresher errors.

The Tigers had 13 hits in the game, two apiece from Grace Dowding, Jeryn Allen, Payton Cooley, Hunt, and Rylee Sand. Three players had two runs driven in: Hunt, Marquez, and Sorensen.

Abbi Arroyo started and went 2.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Alexis Hubbard and Hannah Kline combined for 1.0 inning, allowing five runs on five hits as Kline struck out two batters. Sarah Shevenell picked up the win, throwing 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five.

Game Two
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. The Tigers run was driven in by Katelyn Hays on an RBI-single. The next three innings were scoreless before Doane struck via the long ball. Cooley smacked a pinch-hit three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bethel came back with four runs to take a 5-4 lead. In the sixth, Doane tied the game on an RBI-triple by Allen and took the lead on an RBI-single by Hays. The Tigers added a run in the seventh on a Hunt RBI-single.

Hays led the Tigers with three hits. Allen and Hunt had two hits apiece with Allen scoring two runs. Cooley posted three RBI with Hays finishing with two.

Faith Molina picked up her third win in three days, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Next up for the Tigers will be the home opener on March 6 against Benedictine at 2 PM.
