Softball Offense Explodes to Top Defenders for Split
Softball closed out their doubleheader with Dordt in the early evening hours on Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Tigers won a slugfest, 10-9, to earn a split of the series with the Defenders.
Doane jumped out to the early lead, plating two runs in the top of the first inning. An error allowed the first run to score while an RBI-single from Addison Parsons put the Tigers up 2-0. Dordt came back with a run in the bottom of the first and hit a two-run home run in the second to take a 3-2 lead.
In the third inning, Doane regained the lead as Parsons delivered a two-run double. In the fourth, Faith Molina hit a two-run home run to give Doane a 6-3 lead. The Defenders came back with a home run in the bottom of the fourth to pull within two runs. Bri True hit a two-run double on the left field line to extend the Tiger lead to 8-4 in the top of the fifth. Dordt came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, leaving Doane in front, 8-7.
In the sixth inning, Marisa Marquez singled to drive in a run for a 9-7 lead. Dordt answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning. True hit a home run in the top of the seventh to go up 10-8 but Dordt would not go quietly in the bottom of the inning. A double pulled the Defenders within a run. Dordt had the bases loaded with one out but Molina struck out the final two batters to secure the win.
Faith McDonald started and went 1.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. Molina threw 5.2 innings to pick up the win. She allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out six.
Doane picked up 15 hits in the game with four players having three hits apiece. Milannie Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Marquez was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Parsons went 3-for-3 with three RBI and True was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. The Tigers had four doubles and two home runs in the game.
Next up for Doane will be a home doubleheader with College of Saint Mary on Wednesday, March 26, at 1 PM.
