Softball Drops Game Two Against Saint Mary
Softball capped off their doubleheader with Saint Mary on Wednesday evening with a high scoring affair. The Tigers dropped the game to the Flames, 9-7, finishing with a split of the doubleheader.
In the top of the first, Saint Mary scored first as a wild pitch allowed a player to score. Doane came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Marisa Marquez drove in two runs with an RBI-single to plate Milannie Gonzalez and Grace Dowding. Kayla Meyer followed with a three-run home run to put the Tigers up 5-1.
Saint Mary chipped away with a run in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth to tie the game at 5-all. Doane went back in front in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Jasmine Villegas, her second of the doubleheader. The Flames went in front in the fifth inning with three runs scoring.
In the sixth inning, Marquez grounded out to plate Dowding for the final Tiger run. Saint Mary was credited with a sacrifice fly in the seventh for their final run.
Bri True started for Doane and went 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one. Faith McDonald threw 1.1 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits with two strikeouts. Faith Molina threw 2.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits with two strikeouts.
The Tigers picked up 13 hits in the game, three from Marquez as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Dowding went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Villegas was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Katelyn Hays was 2-for-3 with a triple. Doane also added four stolen bases in the game. Between the two games, the Tigers only struck out twice, once per game.
Official game time was 2:08.
Doane is back at home on Friday, March 28, when they host Morningside at 3 PM. The games were moved up one day due to potential weather on Saturday.
