Softball Season Ends in GPAC Tournament
Softball's season came to an end on Thursday in Orange City, Iowa, in the championship games of the Northwestern Bracket. The Tigers faced No. 10 Northwestern and dropped the first game, 4-2 before falling in the winner-take-all game, 11-2.
A day after upsetting the Red Raiders, Doane once again went toe-to-toe with the top seed in the GPAC Tournament. Northwestern scored a run in the bottom of the first only to have the Tigers answer in the second inning as Bri True hit a solo home run to tie the game. NWC regained the lead in the bottom of the second with a run and Doane came back in the fourth to tie the game on a solo home run by Marisa Marquez.
Northwestern added single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings for the final scoring in the game. Doane stranded four runners over the final three innings in which they batted, including two in scoring position in the sixth inning.
True started in the circle for Doane, throwing 3.0 innings and allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one. Faith McDonald threw the final 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Doane matched Northwestern with seven hits in the game. Seven players had a hit for the Tigers with True and Marquez collecting the only extra base hits. Grace Dowding picked up a stolen base, the 60th of her career.
Game two started with the Red Raiders plating two runs in the bottom of the first for the early lead. Doane came back with a run in the second inning, cutting the deficit in half. True scored on an errant throw following an infield single by Milannie Gonzalez.
NWC plated nine runs in the bottom of the second inning to set up an insurmountable lead for the Tigers. Doane came back with one run in the fifth inning before the game came to a close. Kayla Meyer scored on an error.
Faith Molina started and went 1.1 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on four hits and four walks. True allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk. McDonald threw 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out one.
Doane closes out the season with a 20-26 overall record.
