Softball Back in Win Column After Shut Out Victory
BRANSON, Mo. — Doane softball put together a shutout pitching effort and took advantage of Harris-Stowe miscues in a 6-0 neutral-site win on Tuesday.
The Tigers improved to 8-10 after limiting Harris-Stowe to three hits and striking out nine in the seven-inning victory.
Trinity Robinson started in the circle and earned the win, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings. She allowed two hits, walked one and struck out five. Bri True worked the final 2.2 innings for the save-like finish, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out four as Doane completed the shutout.
Doane broke through in the second inning with the help of Harris-Stowe errors. Addison Parsons opened the frame with a single and Jaiden Papik later reached on an error. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Evelyn Iniguez reached on a right-field error that allowed both Parsons and Papik to score for a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers added two more runs in the third. Katelyn Hays doubled with two outs, Papik reached on an error and stole second, and Iniguez drew a walk to load the bases. Jeryn Allen followed with a two-run double down the third-base line to push the lead to 4-0.
Doane added its final two runs in the sixth on back-to-back doubles. Milannie Gonzalez led off with a double to center, Kylie Caradori drove her in with a double to left and Bri True followed with another RBI double to left for the 6-0 margin.
Allen led the Tigers offensively by going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Caradori went 2-for-2 with a double, one RBI and one run scored off the bench, while Gonzalez, Hays and Parsons each doubled. Doane finished with nine hits, including six doubles.
Papik scored twice, and the Tigers also drew five walks in the win.
Harris-Stowe's best scoring chance came in the fifth when Jaida Phillips singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but True stranded the runner by striking out Rakiara Bogan to end the inning. The Hornets also put a runner on in the sixth before Allen erased the threat with a pickoff and True picked up two quick outs.
Crystal McFerren took the loss for Harris-Stowe despite allowing only two earned runs. She worked six innings, giving up nine hits and five walks while Harris-Stowe committed three errors behind her.
