Pitching, Timely Hits Lifts Softball to Sweep of Mt. Marty
CRETE, Neb. - Doane completed the doubleheader sweep of Mount Marty on Tuesday with a 4-0 shutout in game two at the Doane Ballfield Complex in Crete.
Trinity Robinson was in command throughout the circle, tossing a complete-game four-hit shutout for the Tigers. Robinson did not issue a walk and needed just 59 pitches to finish the seven-inning win as Doane improved to 20-18 overall and 7-8 in GPAC play.
Doane struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Jeryn Allen opened the frame with a single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and came home when Evelyn Iniguez doubled to left-center for the game's first run.
The Tigers added to the lead in the fifth. Jacqueline Ordonez led off with a single and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches before Hannah Pack brought her home with a sacrifice bunt to make it 2-0.
Doane put the game away in the sixth. Milannie Gonzalez singled to start the inning, and after Evelyn Iniguez added another hit, Kayla Meyer drove a two-run home run to right-center to push the advantage to 4-0.
Meyer finished with two RBIs on her home run, while Iniguez went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Allen, Gonzalez, Ordonez, and Addison Parsons also collected hits for the Tigers. Parsons reached base three times with a double and two walks.
Mount Marty was limited to four singles in the contest. Kayleen Jacinto had two of the Lancer hits, while Arin Eaton, Megan Toplovich, and Jayden Simpkins each recorded one.
Doane backed Robinson with a clean defensive effort, turning in an error-free game behind her. The Tigers took both ends of the twinbill after also winning game one earlier in the day.
