Tigers Rally Past NWU for Victory

The women's basketball team rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Nebraska Wesleyan, 68-59, on Wednesday evening in Lincoln. The Tigers moved to 10-9 overall and 3-8 in the GPAC at the midway point of conference play. NWU fell to 3-11 and 2-9 in the conference.

The Tigers led the majority of the first quarter of play, including a five-point advantage following a three-point play by Heather Broman (SR/Geneva, Neb.). Nebraska Wesleyan had a one-person wrecking crew in Felicia TeKolste. She posted 17 of the team's first 19 points to help rally NWU to a 19-18 lead with 1:14 left in the quarter. The Prairie Wolves led 22-19 after the opening quarter.

NWU led throughout the second quarter, building their advantage to eight points, 38-30, with 1:55 remaining. Julia Reed (SO/Syracuse, Neb.) knocked down two free throws for Doane with 50 seconds to play to cut the deficit to six points entering halftime.

Doane opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run behind four points from Broman. NWU countered with a four straight points to regain a 42-40 lead. The two teams exchanged 3-point baskets with McKenna Dodd (SO/Lincoln, Neb.) knocking down one for Doane. Marie Matthews (SO/Omaha, Neb.) converted a lay-up to tie the game at 45. Trailing 47-45, Dodd scored four consecutive points for Doane to give the Tigers a 49-48 lead, a lead they would not surrender.

As the teams worked through the fourth quarter, the Tigers maintained their lead and were able to push their advantage to three possessions on a couple of occasions. The largest lead of the game was the final score following two free throws by Shelbi Bittinger (SR/Milford, Neb.).

Broman led the Tigers on the night with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Hanah Barnard (JR/Beatrice, Neb.) added 10 points and a game-high six assists. Bittinger had eight points to go with her game-high nine rebounds, five assists and game-high four steals. Doane held a 37-25 advantage on the boards in the game.

Nebraska Wesleyan received a game-high 27 points from TeKolste. Morgan Nishida added seven points to go with five assists and four steals. Addie Wetzel picked up a team-high six rebounds.
