Mount Marty Edges Tigers by 5
The women's basketball team put up a valiant effort on the road against one of the hottest teams in the GPAC before falling 72-67 at Mount Marty. The Lancers held a significant advantage at the free throw line which proved to be the difference in the game.
Doane trailed much of the first quarter before going on an 8-0 run which started with a three-point play from Heather Broman (SR/Geneva, Neb.). Converting a free throw, the only one of the half for the Tigers, put Doane in front15-14. Shelbi Bittinger (SR/Milford, Neb.) followed with a 3-point bucket and McKenna Dodd (SO/Lincoln, Neb.) made a lay-up for a 20-14 lead. Doane led 22-16 after one quarter as Broman added a jumper before the end of the quarter.
The Lancers opened the 2nd quarter with a 6-0 run to tie the game and took the lead on a 3-point basket by Mikayla Prouty. The teams went back and forth as Broman made a jumper to regain a one-point lead only to have Prouty make two free throws to put the Lancers back in front. Doane went back in front for the remainder of the half on a lay-up by Broman. Hanah Barnard (JR/Beatrice, Neb.) followed with a jumper to extend the lead, moving her career scoring mark past 1,000 points. Doane led 35-32 at the break as Broman hit a shot to beat the buzzer.
Doane maintained their lead through much of the 3rd quarter, and lead 48-47 with 2:53 to play following two free throw by Barnard. The Tigers were held scoreless the remainder of the quarter and Mount Marty took a 52-48 lead into the fourth.
The Lancers closed their run with six points to start the have, capping an 11-0 run to take a 58-48 lead. The teams exchanged baskets and with Doane trailing by 10 points with five minutes to play the defense did not allow Mount Marty to make a basket the rest of the game. However, the Lancers went 12-of-14 at the free throw line over the final five minutes to hold on for the win.
Broman led the Tigers with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Barnard finished with 15 points and Bittinger added 13 points and eight rebounds. Dodd added 11 points off the bench and three steals. Morgan Hill (JR/Crete, Neb.) posted a game-high seven assists to go with seven rebounds. Doane shot 42-percent from the floor (27-of-64) and 67-percent at the free throw line (8-of-12).
Mount Marty shot 39-percent from the floor (21-of-54) and 86-percent at the free throw line (24-of-28). Alex Kneeland led the Lancers with 20 points and Raquel Sutera added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Prouty posted 15 points off the bench.
